I decided to start a new Kenner League thread because the previous one turned into a Pissing Match between some posters and GW players participated in tonight's(7/22) games. With all the turmoil surrounding the program now, I wasn't sure whether we would see any GW players this weekend.

The Kenner League tweeted that Yuta played for Beyond Belief and Cavanaugh played for On Point tonight. They also tweeted that Cavanaugh looked good. With all the turmoil surrounding GW now, I wasn't sure whether we would see any GW players this weekend.

SATURDAY July 23rd

1PM Beyond Belief vs Darren McClinton All Stars

2:20 Premier Athletes vs Hoop Magic

3:40 DCX vs Tombs

5:00 Clyde's vs Higher Level

By: Long Suffering Fan (4,106 posts) - 7/23/2016 7:45:47 PM

Thomas, I was going to go...was looking forward to it, with the long suffering girlfriend out of town, but given what is going on off the court, combined with 100 degree temp and a 100 mile round trip from Fredericksburg, somehow I lost my motivation.

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 7/23/2016 11:51:20 PM

LSF,  I went to Saturaday's game and it was a mixed bag of results for GW's players. I believe Mrs. Lonergan and some of the kids attended the first 2 games today. She spoke with Goss when he came into the gym

Yuta was a no-show for Beyond Belief, so there was no GW players in the first game. Goss showed up for Hoop Magic, but no Toro. Hoop Magic only had 5 players so Goss played the entire game, he hit 1 or 2 three-pointers and ran the floor well, but he got pushed around in the paint for most of the game. Marfo also got a lot of playing time for DCX against Tombs, Marfo may have had 4 or 5 blocks, he altered a lot more shots. He never got going offensively as his guards wanted to shoot every time and he had some difficulty scoring against Govan from Georgetown. Adam Mitola suited up for Tombs, but did not get a lot of playing time. He is solidly built like his big brother and looked to be a very good passer. Higher Level only had 6 players so Jordan Roland played the entire game, he was also victimized by ball-hogging teammates. But he continues to look stronger and more athletic. There was one play in which he had a fast break with a defender on his heels, he did a ball fake to slow down the defender and the threw down a 2-handed dunk. He also got way up to throw down a 1-handed dunk off a missed shot, but he missed the dunk. We'll see if Roland's improvement translates to more production as a sophomore.

Caught the last two games between A. Wash/Clyde's (Justin Williams) and DCX/On Point (TCav, Matt Hart, and Marfo).

Justin Williams played less than half the game and didn't see much of the ball. Had a couple nice moments. I was impressed seeing him in person, he's a solidly built dude.

The second game was super ugly even by Kenner League standards. Cavanaugh and Marfo were matched up on each other which was fun to watch. Marfo struggled a little bit but he was trying to coexist with GTown's Bradley Hayes who was playing like an asshole for most of the game. Cavanaugh was Cavanugh, couple nice finishes around the bucket, couple threes. Hart looked pretty good running the floor when he got an opportunity.

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 7/24/2016 10:27:57 PM

I was there for all 4 games. Before I get to the game action, Mrs. Lonergan and some of the Lonergan kids returned for today's Kenner League games, and she was friendly with all the GW players, she also spoke with the parents of Colin Goss. I believe John Kopriva showed up at the Kenner League today(just to watch) and he chatted with Mrs. Lonergan too. All the kids had on GW shirts, maybe they are confident that ML will survive this. Is ML still having contact with the team?

The first game Tombs vs. Hoop Magic had Goss going against Mitola. Hoop Magic only had 6 players for most of the game, so Goss got a lot of playing time again today. He did a little better today in terms of scoring as he converted several layups, but he needs to be more aggresive. A lot of his layups should've been dunks. Curtis Symonds was yelling that to him a lot during the game. Symonds even spoke with him and his parents after the game about how he played and what he needed to work on. Symonds has coached youth basketball in Virginia for many years, it's possible that he's known/coached Colin Goss for several years.

The biggest surprise of the day was Mitola. Tombs only had 5 players, so Mitola played the entire game and he played well. His 4 Tombs teammates are all/will be very good college players, and Mitola looked like he belonged. Most times a walk-on/lesser player will be the weak link playing alongside very good players, that wasn't the case with Mitola. He hit a couple 3's, had a nice layup over Goss and made some nice passes. He scored about 12 points.

Colin Smith was a no-show for Higher Level, Jordan Roland played, and had a nondescript game because Higher Level had 9 or 10 guys, so Roland's minutes were somewhat limited. It will also be hard for Roland to get a lot of minutes if Grayer and Livingston from George Mason show up which is what happened today. Yesterday, only Livingston showed up and Roland played a lot of shooting guard.

I agree with Abe's comments on Justin Williams, if A.Wash has 9 or 10 players he probably isn't going to get a lot of playing time or shots. Marfo and Cavanaugh were REALLY battling each other out there. It's good to see teammates going after each other like that. Even though Marfo kind of struggled offensively against Cavanaugh, being physical, attacking him on offense and not backing down from Cavanaugh is what will make him a great player. You can see that Marfo has all the tools to be very good.

By: bobo (3,178 posts) - 7/24/2016 10:44:19 PM

At previous Kenner League games I've always seen the players give a friendly hello/hug to Mrs Lonergan when she's there with the kids.  Seems like she and the family really care about the players.

I also sat next to someone close to John Kopriva at a road game once during his sophmore season.  I asked him how John's doing and he said the coach (ML) can be hard on the players...really hard.  But John wanted to stick it out.   So it seems that things got better for him if JK's going to Kenner league games.

By: Bigfan (2,829 posts) - 7/24/2016 11:32:37 PM

The Lonergans are truly supportive of the players, from the coach to the kids. Mrs. Lonergan is wonderful.

On another point, like to see a Wash Post investigation of Symond' s coaching style.

By: Still Here (7/27/2016 7:31:41 PM)

Remember when we cared about this?

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 7/27/2016 8:58:34 PM

bobo, you're right, I've seen Mrs.Lonergan being freindly with the players at Kenner League in previous years too. It's good that the Lonergans have created a family atmosphere with the players. I brought it up because it was interesting to see now with everything that is going on.

Bigfan, don't forget Symonds coached up Pops/TJ.Thompson/ Mike Hall and Pinnock/Carl Elliot/Ricky Lucas teams to back-to-back Kenner League college titles...he's a Championship Coach!! HA!  But seriously,  Symonds has been coaching AAU and youth ball in Virginia for at least 15+ years. Years ago, I recall someone posted here that he coached an AAU team that had R.Lucas. He's also an assistant coach at Paul VI high school, a school that seems to have at least 5 college prospects on it's roster every year. I've posted some Kenner links down below that everyone here should be interested in.    This is a link to last Sunday's(7/22) games that featured several GW players. In the first game, Mitola is #5 in green and Goss is #21 in white. There are no highlights of Mitola scoring but you can see that he's a solidly built guy. Jordan Roland is #11 in black in the 2nd game, no highlights of him scoring. There are Cavanaugh and Hart highlights in the 4th game.

This is the Kenner League's twitter, they tweet and post pics during games:

Thomas? I hope you or someone attended. I am really looking forward to talking and reading about GW hoops again instead of Smithgate

By: GW Fan (509 posts) - 7/30/2016 6:12:56 PM

I made it out to the first game today. Jordan got to start and played most of the game. He hit a few threes scored on several pull-ups and probably ended up with about 16-17 points for the game. most of his points came off of pull-ups taking his man off the dribble. He is definitely able to get his own shot when he wants to. he airball his first three, which one of his teammates caught for a basket, but then went on to o make his next two from deep. He made almost all of his other shots. with two free throws. Yuta looked very good on defense today. Unfortunately, his teammates were not looking for him on offense so he got very few shots and missed the two three point shots he took. He did drive to the basket late in the game, got fouled, made the freethrows to give his team their first lead of the game, but aside from that didn't do a whole lot on the offensive end. He did however affect the game on the defensive end and rebounded well. Collin Smith was a no-show in game 1.

2cents, I wasn't at the Kenner League today, but they tweeted about a few GW players today and I've posted those tweets down below. Also, they tweeted videos of last night's Tombs game and Mitola was wearing #5 for Tombs again, so those of you going tomorrow should be able to identify him before they announce his name. I'll be at tomorrow's games and will recap what happened tomorrow night.  This is the final play of the Beyond Belief game, you can see Yuta throwing the inbounds pass. It looked like he was supposed to get it back to attempt a game-tying 3, but the guy took the shot(and missed) instead of giving it back to Yuta.  This is video of Goss getting a layup  This is a tweet mentioning how Cavanaugh has been one of the Kenner League's most consistent players.

Caught the second half of game two through the end of the day.

Yuta, Goss and Toro were no-shows in the first game and Bolden was in the stands for the second, which wasn't optimal.

Mitola and Justin Williams did play.  Right now Mitola has the look of a guy you'd cheer for when he comes in with 12 seconds left in a game and a 25 point lead.  Justin Williams was a bit more assertive, but not quiet enough to stand out in summer ball.  I had Mitola with 0-0 0-1 0-0 2 Reb, 1 Ast and Williams with 1-2 0-0 0-0 1 Reb, 1 St, 1 Fo.  I only caught Williams in the second half, not sure if he didn't play in the first or if I just didn't notice the new face.

Marfo played for DCX in the night-cap and was fantastic.  Lots of bigs in the game (incl. Hayes, Govan and Whittington from Georgetown) and he more than held his own.

The tenacious rebounding and great footwork around the basket that you see in the AAU highlights carried through.  I had him with 3-6, 2-4, 0-1 7 Reb, 1 Blk, 1 TO.  A couple of thunderous dunks and the sweet block on Govan linked above.

Payoffs start Thursday.

By: Poster (5 posts) - 7/31/2016 10:29:12 PM

Caught the first game today On Point TC and Hart v Higher Level Roland. On Point was in charge the entire game and won handily. Tyler was his usual steady self with an easy double double probably 20+ and 12. Matt was equally impressive. First he looks much bigger and stronger. Very athletic. Second he was strong with the ball and active at both ends and on the glass. Had him with 15 points 6-7 rebounds 3-4 assists. He scored in a variety of ways, deep three, floaters in the lane stop and pop and two very strong two hand finishes on the fast break. JR had a rough day making only a few shots. If you are expecting JR to over take Hart on the depth chart today was not the day.

By: Poster (5 posts) - 7/31/2016 10:58:08 PM

Jordan didn't much on offense today, but he played good defense.  He had to cope with Tre Kelly, a long time summer league star.  Jordan worked hard and held his own.  Kelly beat him cleanly once or twice, but most of the time Jordan was able to force a tougher shot than Kelly wanted

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 7/31/2016 11:11:28 PM

I was at today's games and will add that Marfo will be a big-time player as we all expected when he choose GW over BCS schools. Marfo is totally relentless and plays with an aggression. On one of his dunks, it looked like 2 or 3 guys just cleared out of the way as he threw it down. The Kenner League video guy was recording the Clyde's-DCX game so the video of Marfo's dunks and block on Govan should be on their youtube channel at some point during the upcoming week. I believe Steeves has been at some Kenner League games watching in the stands, he comes to the games with Cavanaugh.

About the Kenner League playoffs, it looks like A.Wash Associates and Premier Athletes did not qualify, so Justin Williams is the only one who won't be playing again. There will be 2 quarterfinal games this Thursday and Friday night, the semifinals will be on Saturday and the championship on Sunday.

By: The Dude (529 posts) - 7/31/2016 11:59:25 PM

Marfo is a BEAST.  HUU haa!! That's a helluva block, looks at times like a man among boys already just weeks into his arrival in Foggy Bottom.  I think there's a real chance he's the 2nd best GW player as a Frosh, even as his offensive game is still in developmental stages.  Emphasis on chance, fully aware we're months away from real game action. But damn. BEASTly.

By: Poster (5 posts) - 8/1/2016 7:35:56 AM

I didn't go, but when I found out a friend was going, I asked him to take some mental notes. The report I received was very similar to these but he thought Jordan played well offensively, and had some nice OVER (I don't believe this really) TC and one on a fast break after taking the ball from Hart to TO.  He thought he finished with over 15pts and played agressively...was impressed with his D too.  He has made some real progress with confidence it seems.  Marfo will be a huge help underneath, rebounding fool.  His comment was "he wouldn't want to be under the hoop when he throws one down."  My boy was most impressed with Tyler, for the same reasons we all are!  High IQ, consistent and a good leader.

Praise for Cavs on CasualHoya.

By: BM (5,673 posts) - 8/1/2016 9:57:03 AM

I gotta say the Georgetown players look good.  They have a nice set of athletic SGs and wings (including a couple of transfers) to go with the Govan/Hayes combo down low.  Especially impressed with Pryor (ex-JC & RMU) and Peak.  Somehow, the whole always ends up less than the sum of the parts though.

Obviously, I know what you meant, BM, but I laughed out loud at your typo.  He has two? And we have to look at them from multiple angles!?  Is he wearing those awful short shorts from the 80's?  I can't WAIT to see this kid in buff and blue doing damage on the floor.

Must say that this has been the summer of disappointment regarding the Kenner League, admittedly partially because of the punch in the gut we received earlier.   I always look forward to the Kenner as an opportunity to start learning about the newcomers and the returning younger players.   What I did learn is that Marfo is as good, if not better than advertised; that we can expect Jordan to step up his game and that Goss has bulked up but his game has a way to go interms of development. It also appears that Smith is not ready for prime time.   On the other hand, did not get to see Darnell (the player I was most looking forward to in the Kenner), Bolden, Steeves, Sina or Toro (but for a couple of minutes) who are all signficant newcomers.  Although I got to see Cavs and Hart, I already knew what they bring, as with Yuta (who I did not see).

The Japan trip probably affecting GW attendence as well.

Summer league was enjoyable, despite being located in the bastion of hell on earth, until 10 days ago.

Marfo definitely a bright spot. Very strong and will be a beast, but a bit,an inch or two, undersized as a center ( know we don t use one) or really a PF.

Think Lou Roe,if memories go back. Then think of Lou Roe' s career and enjoy a rare GW basketball- induced smile.

I didn't attend any of yesterday's or today's Kenner League quarterfinals, but I've been following what's happening on twitter. Pops is playing for Hoop Magic tonight, going against Jordan Roland on Higher Level. Mitola played last night for Tombs who won their quarterfinal game, so he'll play again tomorrow at 2. I guess Jair Bolden could suit up for Tombs if he's cleared and wants to play. He has sat in the stands for several games. Yuta played last night for Beyond Belief, but they lost. Cavanaugh and Hart are scheduled to play in the final quarterfinal game shortly.
