Con:  

-- Weak HS competition.  Not Tamir Goodman bad, or Seco Camara bad, but given that his main good competition is AAU, sounds more comparable to Jonathan Davis. 

-- Big East schools in the mix.

Pro: 

-- Team moving up to class A, so he'll get good competition this year aside from AAU. 

-- Big East schools in the mix (and a history of choosing academics over just on-court factors). 

-- "Pick and Pop" forward sounds like a Lonergan type.

-- Already 210 pounds as  rising HS senior (at 6'7" or 6'8" ) means he's already heavier than what we're used to (like Omar, Pellom, etc.).  Seems like he could be a perfect size for an A-10 forward.

-- 41% shooting on threes.

Don't know if Lonergan really is intersted, but the pick and pop forward and the athleticism and the focus on academics seem like they might fit nicely.

Guess I should have read the whole thread -- if he's transferring to a 3A schoo, he won't be getting that top competition this year so coaches will really have to focus on his AAU performance to judge.

Quebec, you obviously know very little about Maryland high school basketball to make a statement like that. He will be getting better coaching/competition at Milford Mill than at Glenelg Country Day. Al Holley is a good coach - he did wonders for Tevin Hanner who is going to Loyola. Most of their kids play with Crusader Nation AAU. Enjoy:

You are correct.  I do know next to nothing about MD high school basketball.  But I wasn't talking about his team or the quality of coaching.  i was specifically talking about the competition.  The first article suggested his old school was moving to Class A to play with the best schools (like Calvert Hall), and the one he's switching to is 3A.  

Is 3A actually better competition than A in Maryland? (I'm not asking that as a loaded question - I don't know and I'm curious to learn).

Downer leagues? It has seemed for the past several years that we had a secondary membership in the MEAC.

Depends Quebec - I'd have to see Milford Mill's schedule this year but if they have a game or two with say Lake Clifton or Digital Harbor in addition to playing some of the other tougher games in 3A, I would say not really a step down. It would vary year to year depending on how good some of the A teams are versus how good 3A is plus the other teams you play. I have to think Miles believed he was making a step up this year based on the whole picture.  Some of the best teams in Maryland have been smaller publics over the years - City College, Lake Clifton, Southern, Dunbar, Thomas Stone, Friendly, Centennial etc. I do know this - a lot of folks in the WCAC are trying to scrimmage Milford Mill in the preseason because they believe they will a be a great test for them to get ready for the season. Only point I'm making is that I wouldn't criticize this move nor would I think the college coaches will look at him any differently if he has a strong year.

FQ, 4A represents the largest public schools based on enrollment, followed by 3A, 2A and 1A.  In a perfect world, 4A would have the most competitive leagues because it stands to reason that the larger schools have the most students to select from and should therefore attract the best talent.  However, it oddly does not always work out this way.  Nevertheless, it would be highly unlikely that a 1A or 2A school could be considered the best in the state; that distinction would almost always belong to a 3A or a 4A school.

Basketball does not fit the mold MV in MD. Rarely is the best public school team in the state a 4A. Most of Baltimore city schools are 1A/2A/3A. And in PG schools like Friendly are 3A. Every so often an Eleanor Roosevelt or a Springbrook is a dominant 4A team but generally there are more good teams in the smaller classifications for basketball. The exception to this would be in Montgomery County where the 4A's dominate almost every year.

The University of South Florida, Richmond, La Salle, Drexel, Loyola (MD), NC State, and Wake Forest are among the schools that Miles rattled off as those that had been expressing significant interest.
