On conference call, Lonergan said schedule is going to be out tomorrow (per Andy Katz).

There is no mention of GW on the tourney's website, though we have all heard that GW is in the larger field (of chumps not allowed to actually win the thing even if they do things like, say, win all their games). Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if I recall GW's participation in this is a KH legacy.

Well, folks at GW confirmed our participation in call. 

The only thing up is Missouri v Notre Dame and Cal v GA - regional rounds still listed as TBA

The format of this event is just incredibly insulting to any non-BCS school but particularly to a "next-level" program like GW.  We will likely play a lower-mid level school for the right to then play Missouri, Georgia, Cal, or Notre Dame.  Then, it will be Missouri, Georgia, Cal and Notre Dame that advance to the semifinals of this event (I'll refuse to call it a tournament because this is not what it is) REGARDLESS of whether we win or lose that match-up.  Call it the Gardner-Webb rule which came about when that other G-W knocked off Kentucky in an early-season tournament which denied the Wildcats a trip to Madison Square Garden.  Thereafter, these early-season event organizers decided that the 4 teams they wanted to play in the semifinals would get to play even if they were upset in the prior round.  It's not enough that the big 4 get to play 1 less game to make the semis, now they don't even have to win.

Yes we are all interested in playing BCS schools but there is a big part of me that wishes that GW would make some headlines by publicly announcing that they are withdrawing from this event due to the unjust format. (It could be explained that the old regime agreed to play but the new regime is putting its foot down, assuming that this was the case.)  Any thoughts on "making a statement" vs. "cutting off our own nose..."? 

We claim we want to play better teams on our schedule...then play them wherever and whenever we can. Does it really matter if this is not a real tourney with advancing brackets? And who cares if we don't have a chance to win the CBA Classic? All that being said, I agree that this tourney format is an affront to sports competition. But the better statement is beating one of those anointed BCS teams and letting everyone else scratch their heads why that doesn't get GW to MSG.

I rest my case

First, it is the CBE classic, not the CBA classic.

While I agree that the "tourney " is an affront to competition, the new AD is not about to back out of a commitment made by the school.  Furthermore, looking at last years field, this will give us three more games in addition to the one at Georgia, Missouri or Cal.

Last year, Duke hosted Princeton and Miami(O).  Kansas St hosted JMU and Presbyterian.  Marquette hosted Bucknell and UW Green Bay. Gonzaga hosted San Diego St and IUPUI.  (San Diego St beat Gonzaga, but Gonzaga went to Kansas City anyway.  It did not hurt San Diego St. that went on to be a #2 seed.)

JMU hosted a round robin with Presbyterian, Princeton and Bucknell.  Miami(O) hosted a round robin with San Diego St., IUPUI and UWGB.  If we get lucky, maybe we get to host three games.  If not, we get two neutral court games and one road game against decent competition if last year is any indication.

 From what I've heard we are playing Georgia definitely. Don't know anything about a play in game or any of the other schools. 

There is no play in game.  The format is that each host school (Georgia, Notre Dame, Missouri and Cal) host two games each.  Then those four teams go to Kansas City whether or not they win the games they host. 

The other eight teams that played the host teams go to two locations where round robin play takes place.   Two of those host the round robin.  Last year, Miami(O) lost at Duke but hosted a round robin against the other three teams as indicated in my prior post.  Last year, JMU lost at Kansas St but hosted a round robin as indicated in my prior post.

This format is typical for early Gazelle sponsored tournaments and the aforemention of Gardner-Webb's upset at Kentucky was the catalyst.

Rhode Island participated in the CVC Classic last season and had a game at Pitt followed by three in Toldeo vs Charleston, Toledo, and Univ of Illinois-Chicago.   Rhody is in the Legends Classic this season and plays at Texas and then hosts a POD with three games for each team (believed to be Boston University, Hofstra, and Cleveland State).

I really disliked URI's participation last season given it could not move onto NY and actually played four away games with two on the opponent's home floor.  My feelings however have been somewhat mitigated this year by the fact that URI hosts a POD where it will get three home games without any returns.

it's not a tournament. the CBE is billed as an 'experience'. who knows perhaps Jimi will perform. let's win the first game and then beat a BCS school. we'd be off to a great start.

Sounds like we are likely playing Cal and Austin Peay.  Not sure about UGA.

Based on last years bracket, it would seem that GW will likely play Cal, then two games in some other sub regional and not Austin Peay. 

It would be at Cal then three games at some other location.  See my posts from August 5.  If we are lucky, we are that other location, but I would not expect that.

Wow. Austin Peay has a "beat writer".

 And we don't. Every "breaking" story about GW basketball gets broken on this board. 

GWAA. it's actually not that surprising if you think about it -- Austin Peay is the main form of entertainment in a county of over 150,000 people.    That's a reasonably captive market in a city/county big enough to support its own newspaper.
