Seems like we have a really good chance with this kid.  I am guessing that he is not athletic or big enough to be a high major SG, but I think Lonergan is willing to sacrifice a little athleticism for shooting and basketball IQ.  Lets keep the all met pipeline going, sign him up early and watch him drop 30 a game next year like Savage did this one.

I saw Griffin a couple of weeks ago. He's 6-2 or 6-3 and of medium build but quite strong. He can drive to the basket and shoot from the outside. He sure looked like an athlete to me. I really hope we've got the inside track on him because I believe he'll be pursued by some major schools.

Nick Griffin, Magruder: A 40- point night with 10 three-point shots was perhaps the culmination night for Griffin’s all around talent. You get the feeling Griffin, along with another teammate, is holding back for the sake of team, and give him credit if that is the case. Griffin is a deadeye shooter, can drive on any defender, and is an excellent passer on the move. Griffin may be the best all-around player in the county.

He states that his favorite bball player is Ray Allen and that he emulates his game.  Hopefully we'll see more Ray Allen and less Noel Wilmore...

Whenever I start reading about a great player from Montgomery County, playing for a public school, my inclination is to wonder why he's not playing for a private school.  Before anyone answers "cost", finances usually can be worked out on an as needed basis.  For all I know, he was invited to play for a private school, has a great group of friends at Magruder, and opted to stay there.  Which is great if that's the case.  However, it should be noted that the level of competition is not the same. DeMatha, with their 3 or 4 losses this season, would likely blow 1-loss Magruder off the court, for example. Does anyone know if Nick is an AAU player and if so, how he fares against that level of competition?

Actually MV if you had been paying attention DeMatha and Magruder did play this year in the first game of the year for Magruder. I believe DeMatha won by about 17. Yes DeMatha is more talented and has 5 or more Division I players. But they didn't win because Nick Griffin was overmatched. He could play for DeMatha. In fact a few years ago the WCAC teams were trying to get him. Montgomery County doesn't nearly have the overall talent of any of the good private school leagues (WCAC and IAC) but has individual players who from time to time can play Division I. Nick's teammate Garland Owens is receiving Divison I looks as well. Again, Nick is only a junior and he has some room to improve over the next year. But he is pretty damn good right now. Nick will likely be playing for Team Takeover this Summer.

Dematha did, in fact, blow Magruder off the court this year.  On the positive side, Dematha coach Mike Jones said:  "They might not lose another game this year.  Actually I'm going to root for that just so we can say we are the one that beat them.”

BM, only team in Montgomery County that has even a remote shot of beating Magruder is Churchill but even that would be a huge upset. Magruder is probably at least 10-15 points better than Churchill but as they say that's why they play the games.

Thanks for the report MocoMan.  It was not my intent to suggest that no Montgomery County public school player could ever contribute to a program like GW's and I'm glad to see that Nick played well against DeMatha (which I really just threw out there as an example having no idea that they had played.  As Ken Beatrice would say, "I simply don't have the reeesorces to scout high school ball"). As for your other statement, are you leading me to believe that Springbrook would have zero chance against Magruder (should they meet again), or that Churchill would have a better chance?  I know the Bulldogs have had a nice year but the Devils are still the Devils.

Hey MV, yes Springbrook would have a shot but they have been moved along with Blake, Sherwood and Paint Branch to 4A North this year for the state playoffs due to realignment. Magruder and Churchill are in 4A West which is the remaining 13 MOCO 4A schools. So when I was referring to the matchup between Magruder and Churchill, who are respectively the #1 and #2 seeds in 4A West, that's what I was referring to. In fact, Churchill and Magruder actually may meet twice in the next two weeks or so as they face each other next Tuesday (last regular season game) and then if they both hold their seeds, in the regional finals for the right to go to Comcast. Again, I don't think Churchill has the horses to beat Magruder but they have more horses than anyone else left who might play Magruder in 4A West..

Saw about 3/4 of the game against Sherwood on TV last night (game played last week).  On the positive side, a) dude has a beautiful and quick shoot.  Comfortable in transition or off of picks/curls, b) Doesn't have college bulk yet, but not too far away (as a Junior) and has a good frame.  Negatives were lazy on D and way too many turnovers when they were on offense.  Looked like he was enjoying watching the folks around him rebound the ball.  Don't know if these 2.5 quarters of one game were representative either way.

I have been watching Nick Griffin for last three years as well. I think he more of patriot leg kid at Bucknell, American. He around 6"1 165 and would have play some PG in A10 and he's more of shooter and not great athlete. He plays in avg MOCO leg with mostly D3 talent, so the competiton not that tough. He hasn't play strong against better more athletic teams such as Springbrook 5 pts,  Blake 7 pts, and Gwynn park 11 pts. He' great kid and great student and very high level catch and shoot guy, but doesn't have alot off the dribble. AGain, I do think he's D1 kid, but not A10 level IMO

Only scored 5 points in a playoff win last night.  Then again, his team won by 42 so "the night off" wasn't too detrimental.

I'm not judging Griffin on just pts to clear that up, because I have seen the kid score 40 and 30 against awful teams, but my point was more to his size and athleticism from the Sg spot. I'm not sure he could be combo or play pg at the next level at A10. Again, good kid and good prospect but IMO would need growth spurt or would need to advance his skill set to be A10 player.

Sure sounds like we're his #1 and he's ours.  Looks like we're recruiting a PG, a SG and a PF to fill the three spots for 2013 (Pellom, Smith, Bynes).

Timing is right to gradually break in a new 3-point shooter.

Bigfan, just a reminder, next season, Lonergan is going to be able do something that hasn't happened at GW in years, if ever, put out 5 guys that make up a tradition lineup(size-wise) who can and will shoot from the arc. If Mike can get Griffin in the fold, then, his task at the other two spots will be made that much easier. They will know that they are "the final pieces."

Nick griffin seems to be good fit for patriot league player, but not sure about the A10 he's good shooter with decent IQ. He's only 6"1 avg-below avg athlete and doesn't put the ball on the floor well or defend great on faster, bigger athletic guards. He has looked very good in weak MOCO HS league that didn't have any D1 kids this year.  In the state championship game against E Rossevelt he had 2 pts and they have some good athletes but not any A10 caliber players.  His HS Coach is close with the GW staff.  He's schedule to play with Team Takeover same AAU program that Savage, Mcdonald play with. He's good D1 prospect, but I don't see him on the level of Savage, Mcdonald. He be good in patriot and maybe some CAA teams, but A10 is strecth IMO.  We will see time will tell. I agree he mostly like will land at GW!!

hey dolph -- remember the mike brown, darryl webster, troy webster, joe wassel and mike o'reilly crew as a starting five. pretty traditional size-wise and all except brownie had a good outside shot.  of course, like all of gimelstob's teams, they never achieved their potential.

I've seen some buzz on Griffin on his play at the EYBL on Takeover.  From the AU board...

Nick Griffin was impressive at the second session of the Nike EYBL in Hampton, Virginia this weekend as he made three three-pointers in the last minute of the game to lead his Team Takeover (DC) squad to a one-point upset victory in probably the best game all weekend. Many PL coaches and programs who are recruiting him watched him play over the weekend including Fairfield (HC & assistant), W&M (HC & assistant), JMU (HC & assistant), Mt. St. Mary's (HC), GW (HC & assistant), Holy Cross (HC), VCU (assistant), Niagara (assistant) and Bucknell (assistant). He also picked up an offer from William & Mary. AU told him they would be there but he didn't spot any coaches.

Team Takeover didn’t know what it had on its hands when it agreed to take a look at shooting guard Nick Griffin (Rockville, Md./Magruder). Turns out, Griffin is an ace 3-point shooter and a starter. Mid-majors that value guys with grades and a stroke should be all over this kid. Who knew? Prior to the EYBL, he didn’t have much of a reputation.

An impact player might be coming back to the DMV as Jonquel Jones has decided to transfer from Clemson.  Coach Richardson was her HS coach and guardian throughout HS. This would be a major addition for the GW program if she chooses the Colonials over Maryland. With Maryland headed to the Big 10, they become an option.

Fingers crossed that we land her. Her stats are below. Having seen her play throughout her HS career, she would become the conference player of the year if she comes to GW.

Maybe what he's saying is music to your ears.  I hear the interview.

cagwu...maybe something with your speakers.  I had one headphone on, and heard what your were describing, but with two headphones it was fine. 

Nick definitely sounds like a good, smart kid and definitely fills a need for shooters.  He has a nice quick stroke, and even though he is only 6'2'' his release is very high which will aid him in getting his shot off at the next level.  I worry about his quickness and ability to stay on the court defensively.  I think the most important thing about this interview was work ethic.  It seems he has the ideal profile of a kid that is likely to improve significantly over his four years at GW.

Yes sir. That was George. I think his son plays for Churchill as a freshman although he didn't play much last night - might have got a minute or two at the end when game was out of reach. Son is very tall already probably like 6-5 or 6-6 which means he might be 6-10 or more by his senior year. I spoke with someone at Churchill who said the son played JV this year but will likely be on varsity next year. And they also told me he is not the only NBA legacy at Churchill - Eddie Jordan's son also is a freshman on JV.

Count on Nick going to Comcast. There was only one team I thought could give Magruder a game (yes I know they got upset a couple of times this year) if it mattered and that was the aforementioned Churchill but after watching Magruder dismantle them, I say buy your tickets now.

if its wilmore, lets hope it takes less than 3 1/2 years to lose the deer in the headlights.

The important thing is to pass judgment on the young man before he's ever participated in his first Kenner League game, let alone his first practice or game as a Colonial.

Current judgement about Griffin is he chose to attend GW and attends nearly every single home game, often with his parents. Me likey that level of commitment before he even signs-up for a single elective.
