How long after he retires are people going to stop blaming Jack Kvancz for anything connected to the mess that is this season. You can leave Kvancz out of this. He announced his retirement well before the end of the season last year. And as a result, the powers that be cut him off from any ability to make a decision about the future of the basketball program. You can fault the man for lots of things. BUt those of you with any real understanding of the college basketball landscape know that Kvancz is highly repected around the country for his basketball knowledge, If they had lett this in his hands, we probably would be in a lot better place.
Lay this mess where it belongs. Chernak, Ramsey and Nero.
Chernak completely screwed up the AD search. A completely closed process. No transparency. No search committee. Not even an announcement through normal channels or the hiring. The result is that we got a guy who has no idea of how to take a program to the big time.
Ramsey, who knows nothing about big time basketball and whose arrogance leads him to utter ridiculopus statements about how the GW athletic program should be talked about in the same breath as the Dukes and the Stanfords of the world, has yet to help out in the way that the program needs most: by becoming a big time donor and bringing other big time donors to the table.
And let's not forget that by beginning a search in April, most of the big talent had already found a home. Still, he could have had Joe Dooley, a GW alumn who is the top assistant, and the top recruiter for one of the best programs in the nation. But this was a one horse race from the first daYy of the search. LOnergan was the only serious candidate despite lip service to the contrary.
So you have a program in disaray with leadership that runs the athletic program like a private club. Supported by a board chair unwilling to put his money where his mouth is. So they hire a small time AD who brings in small time coach.
And let's not forget a college president who could not care less if we even have an athletic program and the picture is pretty bleak
Sorry boys and girls, but this is going to get worse before it gets better. But take heart. Chernak will retire. Nero will be looking for greener pastures in a couple of years. The A-10 probably will be out of business in the not distant future and the Colonials will have the chance to start over. Maybe at a different level where it won't be as embarassing to draw 1000 fans to the smallest arena in the league.
By the way. I think that it is unconscionable for Lonergan to throw these kids under the bus. When Hobbs did that this board went nuts.
