Texas Western had the home field and a much faster team, but George Washington enjoyed a 20-pound per man advantage on average.

The Miner lineup featured future NFL Hall of Famer Don Maynard.

 A combined seven completed passes (10 if you count the interceptions). A different era. Still one of the greatest bowl upsets ever, is the game ball back on display at the Smith Center?

... I had kept my ticket stub from that game, but alas, it's been lost for a good many moons. The thing that stands out most for me (obviously, other than the game itself) was the tremendous hospitality shown to the entire team and the traveling contingent by the folks of El Paso and Texas Western (which, as you must all know, became UTEP).  They made the event memorable even before we upset their team.

I remember thinking back to that trip some years later, the day I learned we were abandoning football for the obvious financial reasons.  A total bummer.

 GWAA given what footballs looked like in that era you may have mistaken it for a basketball.

i'm sure ELJ remembers Steve (Hoss) Korcheck who starred for GW. he was AP 3rd team all american center in 1953 all Southern conf football 52-53 baseball 53-54. drafted by 49ers he decided on bb. he was catcher on Senators few yrs in 50s interrupted by military service. Korcheck was head BB coach and taught gym in late 60s when gym was required. that's how i met him when i took golf (Hains Point). he urged me to try out for golf team but my father said no golf freshman yr. unfortunately i never followed thru. 

Coach was a big, mean looking guy (to an 18 YO) but was a really nice guy. he earned his Masters and EdD at GW.  he went on to work for KC Royals and later became President of Manatee Community College.

That was the old days when even manatees could get a college degree if all they did was put in the effort.

The game ball is safely on public view in the Smith Center, although the new display/trophy cases are on the lower level near the bathrooms instead of flanking the ticket office on the main level.  There is alo a '57 Sun Bowl football on display in a case in the 5th floor lobby of the Marvin Center - not sure why there is more than one on campus!
