    Kromah attracting growing college interest

    By James Quinn
    ESPNRISE.com  http://sports.espn.go.com/highschool/rise/basketball/boys/news/story?id=3930454
    Updated: February 24, 2009, 5:35 PM ET

Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Greenbelt, Md.) is one of the top public school basketball programs in Maryland, reaching the Class 4A Final Four in both 2006 and 2007. This season's team is led by 6-foot-5, 190-pound swingman Lasan Kromah, who is averaging 21 points and 8 rebounds a game and is a strong candidate for DC Area All-Met and Maryland All-State honors.

Kromah, a third-year varsity player, plays wing guard and both forward positions for the Raiders. During his junior season he averaged 14 points and seven rebounds on his way to earning All-County honorable mention accolades.

"Lasan has had an ecellent season for us so far. He has played both inside and outside for us. In addition to being a great scorer, he has helped on the boards, played good defense," coach Brenden O'Connell said.

"He is definitely a Division I prospect. He is hitting nearly 45 percent of his 3-point attempts, but mostly he is just a flat-out scorer. He can shoot deep, get to the rim and he has a good mid-range game. I think he has the skills to play wing guard in college, though as he gets bigger and stronger, I think he can also play small forward at the net level."

Kromah did not sign a letter of intent this past November. Waiting until spring to choose a college, Kromah is getting a lot of recruiting interest, including George Washington University, UMBC, Virginia Commonwealth University, Northeastern, Old Dominion and Jacksonville.

"Interest has picked up as the season has gone along, and I anticipate even more schools offering Lasan scholarships in the net few weeks," O'Connell said.

Another article on his team:  http://sports.espn.go.com/highschool/rise/basketball/boys/news/story?id=3842095

If all of these recruits actually come, you can't say that KH didn't at least attempt to recruit like a MF this year.  Net year will probably be a transition year and I'm not epecting a whole lot, but I am cautiously optimistic about this class being successful in the future.  Then again, I thought that about the Miles Beatty class, so who the hell knows.

    cagwu says:

    1 (Taylor)↓ = 1
    2 (Ware)↓ 2 (King)↑ 2 (Allbritton) 2 (Smith) 2 (Branch) 2 (Johnson) 2 (Kromah) = 7
    3 (Hollis)↓ 3 (Pellom) = 2
    4 (Edwards)↓ 4 (Warren) = 2
    5 (Katuka) 5 (Opoku) = 2

I would put Travis King as a PG.  Obviously he was a little slow for a pg last year because of the knee problems.  But I think a year of off season trainging and work on his point skills, he'll be fine as a combo guard.

Dywane Smith and Aaron Ware are both SF type players for GW.  Athletic wing guards who can score in low and on drives but not good shooters.

Let's say Mat Allbritton will be leaving.  Branch probably not comming.  Branch would be a shame as he's the highest rated SG of the Johnson, Kromah, Branch trioka of SGs. It's surprising we haven't heard anything yet or that he announced another school. Maybe he's going the Prep school route as well and he'll be on Hobbs' list for net year.

Hollis will have to get most of his minutes at the PF spot as the other bigs (Edwards, Warren, Katuka and Opoku) clearly do not add up to 80 minutes of playing time.  Katuka = 20-25; Warren = 17-20; Edwards = 10-12; Opoku = 0.  That's about 55 minutes total so Hollis will be needed for about 25 as a PF.

    PG: Taylor and King (combo)

SG: Johnson, King, Kromah, Branch (or another mystery recruit)

SF: Smith, Ware and a little of Hollis

    PF:  Hollis, Warren and Pellom

    C: Katuka, Edwards and Opoku

Damian is a natural 3, and I'm afraid that, like Carl and Mo before him, his senior year is going to be damaged by being asked to play out of position (in his case, Power Forward). It clearly had a negative impact on their relationships with KH, and I'm not sure that Hollis and Hobbs are bestest friends in the whole wide world as it is.

That's something I'm going to nervously watch.

The ESPN report makes Pellom sound like a Hollis clone: http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=74012&season=2009&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncb%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d74012%26season%3d2009

athletic, handle, passing, outside shot, finesse, disappears

Net season I'm hoping we see Damien of the last 3-4 games, a more aggressive and assertive athlete capitalizing off the glass.  Would love to see him comfortably etend the role of a 4 like he appeared to do down the stretch.  Bobo- I'm hoping you're right about King.  I still find it hard to recall his passes threading many needles last season.

Not impressed either by the names, though VCU has come up in the world.

Don't think he was really heavily recruited, but maybe someone else knows differently.

Have seen his height listed from 6'3 to 6'5 in the articles, so hard to tell his size other than that range.

Surely like the 45 percent from the 3. Hope he can make his own shot.

If he's signed, welcome to the Colonials, Mr. Kromah!

...which brings me to another long-standing soap-bo of mine: the '3. Have we learned nothing over the years from recruiting guys named Seco, Jackson, Andry, Greg, Noel or Matt? There's a hell of lot more to basketball than shooting from long distances. If you disregard passing, dribbling, defense and rebounding then you've got the perfect player.....no floor balance and plenty of mis-matches all over the court....but the perfect player. I'm not sure why anyone would throw a scholarship away on any player who can only do one thing as insignificant as the '3--a shot by its very nature which puts one player always out of position on the court.

Guys like Monroe  and Hall certainly prove you can teach a kid to be a 3-point threat over time, but kids who can't pass, dribble or rebound are probably not ever going to pick these skills up. I'd also argue you are a far more effective long-distance shooter if you have other threats at your disposal....I mean other than just standing there awaiting several picks, thus occupying more of your teammates, in order to get your precious shot off. Imagine how much more effective a player like Ware would be if he shoots 500 '3s/day in the off-season simply because he can already drive to the hoop and rebound a bit?

Coaches have become sucked into the AAU lore of the dunk and the '3 they now recruit around them. It's just sad. Basketball IQ has dropped off to net to nothing and the flow of the game seems to be lost on kids who have no clue where to be on defense, on the glass or are just caught wandering aimlessly around on the perimeter waiting to jack a '3. Having watched a lot of basketball this past weekend, the overwhelming impression I got from these supposed championship teams is they live-and-die by the '3. ANY team who limits their turnovers by valuing possessions and works for the always-open mid-range jumper would destroy most anything I saw this past weekend. I'd go as far as to contend a team who plays smart could win more games by NEVER even attempting a '3. Not sure where the rest of the game has gone to serve the almighty '3 ball, but it ain't workin'.

Thus endeth the crusty, old guy rant.

I somewhat disagree with you Herve. (I don't think I ever said that before).  No, you certainly don't build a team around a 3 point shooter, but like the super fast runner or great fielder in baseball, there should be room on a 13 person basketball roster for the 3 point specialist.  Even if the players you named were not particularly productive, every team needs that one zone buster.  Wilmore did effect the games when he was in, even if his numbers were often invisible.  Of course he would have been more valuable if we had more of an inside game.

Do we have any word on Kinley Branch yet?

It is somewhat surprising nothing has been said on his possible removal from GW's incoming class list in any of the recruiting publications.  He's a pretty highly regarded recruit and if he was going to sign somewhere else, you'd think that would come up somewhere. i think the official signing day is April 17 (?), so we should find out soon on many of these kids.

Maybe Branch goes Prep school for a year and then comes to GW in 2010, assuming Hobbs still has his job.

The recruiting sites don't keep very close tabs on GW.  None of them list Kromah and only one lists Johnson.  Since by all accounts we're still recruiting another player - obviously one of the si is out.  And the most talk about the guy definitely not coming is Branch.  And most of the talk was about grade and legal troubles so who knows what will happen to him other than not coming to GW.

    4/13/2009 3:09:00 PM
    Poster: BM

The problem with the "Branch not coming" argument is that reports had him as smart (Princeton looking at him) and, um, family oriented (mom did his visit to GW).  Pellom was the recruit with the alleged discipline problems.

    Poster: thinker

That's true, BM, but Hooper, for eample who seems to be a bit in the know has talked VERY recently about Pellom coming and contributing.  There was a lot of talk a while back (I don't remember the poster) who said adamantly that Branch wasn't coming due to grades and legal troubles involving girls and drugs.  That's all we have to go on based on what has been written on this site.
