Michigan/Siena This one is easy. The Michigan game was the biggest game ever played by GW (sweet 16) and we hung in late into the second half vs. one of the best college bball teams ever. This is a source of pride, not shame or disappointment. My nod is Siena.
Indiana/American. This was an awful American team that we could not even compete with in the second half. American gets my vote.
avier (tip in) vs. UMass (buzzer beater). My vote is avier, simply on the pain factor. We were not a good time, and played great throughout the half, on the road, vs a very good avier team. Like the Michigan game, our play was a source of pride, but unlike the Michigan game, the manner in which we lost caused my great emotional distress.
UMBC/Lasalle. This one is close. Remember, UMBC had already beaten 2 A-10 teams, and would eventually win their conference and go to the dance. However, we went there undefeated, coming off of a 3rd straight appearance in the dance. This was really the first time in years I saw us slapped around by lesser competition, and it hurt. And, sadly, rather than it being the apparition, it because the rule. So, I will go with UMBC, even though Lasalle was pretty darn embarassing, ranking as one of our worst home performances ever.
Charlotte vs. Temple (A-10 tournament). We already made our plans to stay over in Philly (actually we were going to stay in Atlantic City), we were that certain that victory was in hand. And we NEVER act rashly or celebrate prematurely when it involves GW basketball. This one also hurt, and I would send the rest of his career hating Ngongba for the foul (even though I know many said that it was a phantom foul), but how does a big man get even close enought to a 3 point shooter to possibly be called? So, it is Temple in a landslide.
Duke vs. avier. This is my pass game. We were suppose to lose to Duke, and we were playing in NC, even though it should have been more competative. And, since I don't recall the avier game that is referenced, I will take a pass.
I*wa vs. Vanderbilt: Our showing on national television vs. Vanderbilt ranks as one of the all time embarassing games. However, I*wa set a standard that I believe will never be topped, both for the embarassment (up 17 points with less than 8 minutes left) and the pain. True story...I actually took a knife to my GW hat after that game. Add to the sadness that the GW team that lost to I*wa may have been one of the best GW teams ever, and could have gone deep.
Coppin State/Longwood vs. F**rfield. F**rfield will be another game that warms the cockles of my suffering. Not only did we blow an 8 point lead with 30 seconds left (setting my "no lead is ever safe with less than one minute standard"), but I was in Vegas at the time (I had the game on) and had of course bet on GW. Still, I am going to go with Coppin State/Longwood, just on the sheer embarassment of how a team that had 2 seasons ago went to its 3rd straight tournament could sink as as low as it did with these 2 losses. Jesus...we lost to Coppin State and Longwood. Beside, having been in Vegas for F**rfield, I recall the line on the game was even, so the loss itself wasn't a shocker (at least not according to the odds makers) but the manner of loss was.
