Is Hobbs and Company setting the Table for Something Special?
7/29/2010 12:59:00 PM
Poster: Dolphin Michael

Splattered all over a couple of threads there seems to be a realization that this team has the potential to do something special. There is also an underlying current of discussion that Hobbs again has a team with the 'parts' to be trouble. There is a realization that these players are fighting for time. Fighting for time is a bad thing on a 500 team, but that changes when you are a 20 win team.

Maybe it's the crazy weather or maybe just the fact that is, indeed, coming to pass, but we could be seeing the set up for "special #2."

Certainly, the biggest question mark facing the team is what life without Damian Hollis will be like...

We won't really know until we get into deep December and we face situations where Hollis would take the shot that no one else wanted to take or Hollis would get the board that no one else had the physical skills to get. We will have to see.

What I want to see is what Warren adds or doesn't add. No idea whatsoever.

I also want to watch what Marshall brings to the bench. What I hope he brings is the message to just be quiet and take it to the floor when you have the opportunity and then leave it there.  Basically, show us what you got while you play within the scheme.

All Hobbs is trying to find is another 2 or 3 points a half that change the weather pattern that are GW games. Last year at this time, I was talking about the eact same thing. We needed a couple of points a game to become 50 or better and we did. They came from unlikely places that no one saw coming, but they came. We also saw TT turn into the guy that we had all hoped to be at Foggy Bottom. All the freshmen stepped up at least once and won games. That is almost unheard of.

Last year, I was pretty much done with Hobbs. Let's make that the year before that. I saw a guy who appeared to be stubborn and unwilling to adapt to situations. Now, I think he may have found out how to survive and even thrive.

I also wasn't a huge fan of Aaron Ware, not because he was a bad guy, but I just thought that his game wasn't where we needed it to get to the net level and now I read that the Kenner league is his. Not bad. Finally, I think that Tim Johnson will have a big lift in 2010 from the beginning of the season last year. Half court alley oops?

OK, the final joke I see here is the ragging on Fitzgerald. back in the day, if there was a pickup game and  anyone was selecting the team, they would use on of the early picks to take Brian Magid. You want a shooter. We got a freaking shooter. From what I hear, we got one of the best. AND YOU ARE UPSET? Dopes. No, sorry, no name calling. His own coach last year said that he won four or five games. We got him. That's four or five games on one of the best teams in the land. This is GW and we got him.

If we can pressure the other team; if we can get to the hole and to the line; if we can rebound; if we can run; if we can drop the three... we win. We have scorers up and down the roster. This is not the 07/08 GW team. What's more we are seeing them develop. That is good. If we start to see 20 win type seasons, then the rest will take care of itself.

I haven't even mentioned Kromah and Smith. The point here is that we have a bunch of guys who, I think, want to win each personal battle on the floor and who will try to do it within the system. What will scare the opposing coaches and teams will be when we actually start doing that on a routine basis. I think we may start to see that this year.

It's probably all comes down to the same thing it almost always does with us, and with most college basketball teams -- Can we make shots?

If we make shots, we'll be good.  If we're missing or a poor shooting team, we'll stay still or slide backwards.

That's where the young guys come in.  Early in the year, Kromah looked like the best GW shooter since hte 3 point line, but later in the season looked good, but not spectacular.  We need him to be a 40% 3 pt. shooter, rather than a Kwame Evans (his slashing points will come, but we need him to make shots).

We need Dwayne Smith to shoot a good % to make up for Hollis' absence.  That's what stepping up means for him, along with grabbing more boards.

We need Taylor to shoot a little more, especially from deep, and to make those shots.

Need Johnson to get more playing time and get his shots to fall.  As Dolphin Michael and I have agreed, his elevation and form on his jump shot are terrific, but his percentage was surprisingly low from 3.  We need those shots to connect.

When Bynes shoots, he needs to connect. He's capable and just needs to play better on offense.

And if either of those freshman sharpshooters, Mikic or Fitzgerald, can defend well enough to stay on the court, we need them to make nearly half their attempts.

Now I don't mean to suggest it's all about 3 point shooting, although thath's a lot of it.  We lost a lot of games last year because of missed shots around the basket.  Have to finish better,  Katuka has the ability to shoot 60% if he stays focused.  Need him to do it, not miss easily makable shots.  Need Edwards and Warren and others to make their tip-ins (last year, I thought we were, by percentage, one of the worst 2nd chance teams I saw, but I don't have stats to back that up).  And we need to improve our FT% a bit.

Basically, if we can make more shots, we can easily make up for the loss of Hollis - because we know t he defense and athleticism will be there.

Dolphin, as devil's advocate......what makes you think Fitz, who avg 6.4 ppg and <2 rebounds/game in prep school is going to big plus for us net year?  what does that say the rest of his skills?  you 'hear' he's a great shooter? what did Brian Magid do for the program?

i agree with thinker let's give the freshmen a chance to prove themselves on the court.  it's really silly season when people speculate on which incoming freshmen will transfer. my guess is we'll be better than last year, and who knows we might win 20 with our weak OOC schedule. GO COLONIALS.

There are three glaring things that stand out about last year:

- We were one of the worst teams in DI at defending the 3

- We were one of the worst teams in DI at making the 3

- In most games that were close and/or we lost we went for long periods (particularly at the end of games) where we simply could not get baskets

Here's why I think that at least points 2 and 3 should improve:

At the end of games and in tight games our freshman often didn't feel comfortable taking "the" shot.  Kromah and Smith in particular will have significantly benefited from a full year of eperience.  Bynes has really been working on his shot - taking 500 jump shots a day since the end of the season.  He can be an eplosive scorer.  All three of them can drive well and having a confident shot forces defenders to choose between giving up the drive OR the shot.  Johnson didn't play a lot last year for a number of reasons.  He clearly has the skill and athleticism to be a major factor on the team.  It is yet to be seen if he "gets it" basketball and teammate wise to fulfill that promise.  To me he is a wildcard. The book for opposing defenses on both TT and Aaron was - give them the shot if they want to take it and double on them if they try to drive.  They drove a lot into traffic and rarely had confident "ready" shooters to kick out to if their drive was blocked.  So I think we might actually have been better this year even if we didn't add any freshman just on the improvement of the players we have.

Whatever the defensive abilities of Mikic and Fitzgerald end up having, both have good size and are considered to be ecellent pure shooters - we've seen some of that in Kenner from Fitzgerald - we've just heard that about Mikic.  Having TT, Aaron, Kromah, Smith, Bynes, and Johnson all able to drive - hopefully gives Mikic and Fitzgerald tons of open looks (obviously the other players get more open looks as well).  Because of Fitzgerald's size he will always be able to get his shot off because he will have a much smaller defender on him OR he will draw out an opposing big that will open driving lanes for his teammates.  At this point, most teams in the A-10 have a bigger guy that shoots threes - think Justin Harper and Ryan Butler for Richmond, Chris Johnson for Dayton.  We will simply be better on offense this year.

To me the bigger question going into this year is will Warren/Fitzgerald/Mikic/one year more eperienced Pellom added to Jabari? and hopefully a much bigger and stronger Katuka give GW a strong enough inside defensive/rebounding/scoring presence?  For all the scrutiny given the incoming freshmen - nobody really talks about what Warren may bring or whether Jabari can step up his game in his 4th year at GW.  Joe, btw is in Oklahoma working out with a renowned weight trainer hoping to add at least 20 pounds of muscle as we speak.

All in all I think there is a lot to be ecited about going into this Fall.

42/7Fun with statistics:  A freshman Damien Hollis put up 5.2 points (50.4%) and 3 rebounds per game, averaging 15.7 minutes.   In comparison, a freshman David Pellom put up 2.8 points (53.5%) and 3.3 rebounds per game, averaging 15.0 minutes     A junior Joseph Katuka averaged 5.9 points per game, shooting 52.7% over 15.1 minutes per game,  Guard shooting percentages were Kromah at 45.7, Taylor at 42.7,  Ware at 42.1, and Bynes at 32.8.  As a team, we were 10th (in conference) in assists,11th in assist/turnover ratio and 13th in 3 pointers made.

newtman,

Magid gave a huge measure of local cred. Secondly, for the third time, I will mention that Rick Petino said that Fitzgerald was one of the top shooters (stroke) that he has seen. Also for the third time, Fitzgerald was complimented for personally winning 4 or 5 games for his top 10 team last year by his coach. You grasp less important stats and let them get fried into your brain. THINK FOUR WINS on a very good team.

I'm sorry Newt, but that's about as clear as I can get. Sure, all the rest may be true, but we are looking for wins, not scoring averages. We aren't replacing that many points, we are trying to earn wins. We need guys who will kill the other team. To your credit, sure, Fitzgerald may not be a guy that can do it, however, the long shot that he can is a good bet (IMHO).

That's it.

As they way, newt, the proof is in the pudding. We will all see. As a matter of reference, none of us would have thought that Pellom would have won an early season game on the road, or Bynes would key a victory with 4 straight threes, but they did.

I don't think Rick Pitino ever said that Chris Fitzgerald was the best shooter he's ever seen, no matter how many time DM says he did.  When signing Mike Marra (also of NMH), Pitino said that "Mike Marra was the best shooter he's ever seen".  No mention of Fitzgerald.  The quote DM's referencing below regarding Fitzgerald is from Fitzgerald and Marra's coach, John Carroll, saying that (IHO) Fitzgerald is on par with Marra and Pitino really liked Marra.

“Rick Pitino told me that Mike Marra was the best shooter he’s ever seen and Chris is right on par with that,” Carroll said.

Clearly, there is a difference.  Pitino recruited Marra but seemed to have no interest in Fitzgerald.  Mike Marra was a starter for NMH averaging 15pts, 3rbs, 3 asts as a senior after going for 19, 3 and 3 as a junior.  Fitzgerald went off for 6, 1 and 1.

I'm not sure why speculating that sophmores like Bynes, Smith or Johnson (all of whom have shown shown real talent and ability) will not be on the team net year is fine but questioning if much lower recruited players like Fitzgerald or Guess will get much playing time is flat out CRAZY, but to each his own.

I think it is ridiculous to speculate about anyone not being on the team a year into the future. It's just disrespectful to the fact that they are spending so much time and effort getting ready and trying to improve. With regard to the freshman, I just don't think it's fair to not give them a chance. No they haven't proven themselves, but neither have they proven themselves to be worthless. Let's talk about what we know, and just assume that somewhere down the line we may get a contribution from one or two of them. Maybe we even discover another gem! That being said, I've seen 2 out of the 3 play, and i've been quite impressed.

Part of the freshmen "fear factor" is at least two of these guys are being touted as top-flight '3 shooters and little else. Needless to say, GW fans have been down the "'3-guy" recruit road many times before with names like Magid, Huddock, Payne, Khamenia, Allbritton, etc., littering the gym with transfer paperwork and almost no boscores. Maybe they'll work-out, but GW history says "No". The good news is it will be decided in practice and, hopefully, in games and not on niche message boards.

I agree, and while I think that one or two of them will pan out into very good players in the net 1-2 years, that is etremely understandable. it is, however, not the same viewpoint against which I was arguing. I don't like that we are bashing them. Speculating about playing time and admitting doubts about their projected success is a far cry from predicting their post season realease for transfer. Am I lying?

It may be my faulty memory but I do believe that Brian Magid's college career was over before the three-point-shot was adopted in the Atlantic 10.  Howver, I do note that Brian was one of the few players for whom people would come just to see him shoot foul shots.

All of us will be thrilled -- and we'll win a lot of games -- if one of these guys is a Pat Carroll/Jimmy Baron/Akeem Richmond type.

We're just hoping they aren't more like Jackson Payne, the best shooter I've ever seen in a GW uniform.

Dolphin, read herve's post above. that's what i'm basing a comment on. i've said let's judge them after seeing them in action against A-10 competition.dont you think it's odd that very few colleges recruited on of the country's best shooters? i hope they all succeed. and Magid had street cred, what? remember Allbritton made a 'zillion' threes in HS.  i agree with you that we could win 20 with our schedule.

i stopped speculating about freshmen more than 20 years ago, just trying to provide some balance.  hope we improve our 6-11 record (tourney counts) in A-10.

By most accounts, not that many teams really recruited Lasan either.  There are various reasons why different players get recruited heavily or not.  Tristan Spurlock is a guy who was HEAVILY recruited - could have gone almost anywhere as a freshman.  He was a bust though and had to work VERY hard to find any type of school to take him now - Central Florida.  None of this is a science - plenty of "eperts" miscalculate how a player is going to turn out.  Some guys have talent but no heart - and visa versa.  Some guys have a skill set that just doesn't work with the type of system a particular school plays.  Some guys just don't develop good chemistry with their teammates.  Some guys just don't adjust to college.  There's no guarantee no matter what.

I know the Magid story because I played against him in HS summer leagues.  He was from Blair and led the school to the state championship - I think he led DC area in scoring that year - a big deal given the teams that Dunbar, DeMatha, Mackin, Carroll, Lee, TC Williams and West Springfield were putting out on the court during that period.  He had a sweet stroke whether it be from the imaginary 3 point line or any other place.  He shot great free-throws.  He signed with the Terps.  Unfortunately the Terps were loaded with a NBA roster (think John Lucas and Brad Davis) and verrrrrrrrrrry quick.  Magid struggled to get onto the court due to team depth and his lack of top 20 team quickness.  He still was a Terps fan favorite with the fans chanting his name when the score made it clear there was time to put in the bottom 4 or 5 players.  Then every time he got the ball, no matter where he was the fans chanted "shoot!"  He came to GW and made an impact (the Terps ended up grabbing some guys like Ernie Graham, Albert King to fill the void).  He provided the team with a deadly outside option to loosen up the zones for some pretty decent bigs we still had.  He was very very very accurate from the charity stripe.  He made a huge impact.   My mind is gray on this, but I thought he was drafted in the NBA by the Bullets or somebody and ended-up playing pro ball in Israel.

notta's memory is pretty good. That was the tail end of some pretty good basketball gold in Monkey County. It was neck and neck with PG at the state's. My classmates ended up at some pretty good programs (NC State and UVA) and many to others. Magid was trouble in any game ... organized or pickup. As I remember, if you allowed him to catch and shoot without making a move, you were toast. In pickup games, you had to deny just enough to stay alive. Too much, and you were just a pickup game whore.

To this day, I would say the best that I played with in pickup games as far as pure shooter was Bob Tallent. Pat, pre-knee injury was almost as good, but he had a mid-range game that was REALLY Good. If he had a bit of size on you, you would need all sorts of help. What made that a bad solution was that he was an above average passer.

Herve's point regarding the 3-point shooter is fair, especially under HObbs (Greg, Matt, Noel, and I'm sure others I'm forgetting).

BUt there's a big difference between these two g uys and those 3 guys- size.  Greg Matt and Noel all played on a team that wasn't really able to get three point shooters open looks.  There are no screens.  There was occasionally a drive and dish- but there were no screens.  Size allows players to shoot, even without those screens.  This makes these two players different.

Here's the legitimate case for fear: At times, KH comments and actions have been both petulant and etreme.  KH has the type of personality that likes to be challenged.  He likes to be told what he can't do so that he can go out and prove people wrong.  Tell KH he only knows how to coach his teams a certain way?  He'll change his ways and play a slow-it-down defensive grinding style.  Tell him his teams are undersized and he'll make sure they are one of the better rebounding teams in the conference.  Tell him how well his teams are playing and the word "overachieve" can't be far behind.  Today, he needs shooters so he went out and recruited shooters.  However, did he do so instead of recruiting a less heralded shooter with a more complete game?  Did he recruit shooters that can also run the floor and play defense?  Did he solve one problem only to create another?  Did he make etreme recruiting decisions?

Again, if you only go by this board, in past July's, Lasan Kromah was either the 5th or 6th best of the freshmen, Matt Allbriton was never going to miss, and JR Pinnock was going to hopefully be a capable back-up for Ricky Lucas.  In other words, time will tell.

There are too many question marks with our front court to really know how far this team can go.  The perimeter shooting, both offense and defense, has not been good either.  You have a front court and solid offense and defense out on the perimeter and you have a shot at winning any game you play in college basketball.  None of us can say whether GW has these things or not for net year.  Last year we did not have them.

As long as people are throwing out crazy predictions, and it is the middle of the summer, I think that Kromah is the first player I have seen in a GW uniform since Yinka Dare that has a legitimate shot at an NBA career.  Pops, Hall, and Pinnock were all great, so were Shawnta and Kwame, but in the one season I saw Kromah, I thought he was capable of putting together a complete game on offense.  He had moves around the basket, and can shoot etc.  If he can hit the weight room and keep his quickness up, he will be the right size for an NBA shooting guard.  I know it's early to say that, but I think the potential is there.

LA Fan,

I agree with you about Lasan.  It is just so tough to get to the NBA.  The toughest thing is to have a skill set that matches the need for the position that your body fits in with.  Pops is basically a 5 in the body of an NBA 3.  The surest way for him to make it to an NBA roster would be to grow 4-5 inches.  JR is basically a 3 in a 1-2 body.  To me, since Yinka, the guy that fit best was Carl Elliott he was a 1 with great NBA 1 size.  I suppose his failure to reach the NBA so far has been due to too many turnovers and not good enough shooting.  Mike is the guy that to me should most reasonably be on an NBA roster because he has very good 3 skills with good 3 size.  Probably what has hurt him was a) not getting a real chance, and b) not having over the top athleticism with what would be seen as a big upside.  He's eactly the kind of player the Wizards should be looking at to fill one of their final roster spots.

Of the 60 players drafted by the NBA recently (at least 15 of whom will probably never play in an NBA game) - one came from the A-10 - Jordan Crawford of (27th).  We played against another one - Larry Sanders of VCU (15th).  One other guy we played last year just signed a partially guaranteed deal as an undrafted rookie - Jeremy Lin of Harvard.

Kromah will not sneak up on anyone this coming season. Lets see how he responds with that bullseye on his back this year, with Damien gone. , Everyones game plan is gonna be to shut him down, because he was our second leading scorer . Can he avoid the sophmore jin ? If he raises above all of this this year , I will climb onboard the Kromah NBA train. One NBA player on your team means you get to the big dance. Two means a sweet siteen.. Three or more the sky is the limit. So if you guys are right , that means we will be in the tourney this year..

Honestly , I feel we have five pros . Meaning they will get paid to play basketball somewhere in the world. And out of those five , any can develope into a NBA pro in the net three years..... So I am predicting now a sweet siteen birth in three years....Or at least the round of thirty-two .. Seriously !!

Plato, I sincerely hope you're right about Kromah not sneaking up on anyone.  I hope defenses constantly double-team him and have the attitude that if they stop Lasan, they got GW beat.  This would play right into our hands.

And that is the good news about this year...lots of balance, lots of guys who can take the big shot, and even on top of this, no obvious "this is his team" type of guy like Damian was last year and Rob was the year prior.  This group isn't as talented as the 2004-07 teams (at least not yet), but I'm ecited about the number of options we will have and the inability of defenses to pinpoint 1 or 2 guys to shut down in order to beat us.

I echo MV's sentiment, but for a different reason.  The two players MV mentioned - Hollis and Diggs both developed issues when the younger guys came in and played well.  I believe that Lasan playing really well early in the season got into Hollis' head and threw off his game for much of the year.  Diggs also was a problem when Hobbs wanted him to lead the second unit which he felt was beneath him.  Having the clear team leader can be a double edged sword.

Actually I feel this years team will be much better than last years. It appears that there are no egos , and it seems all the guys get along well. And I felt Damien took  away from that. Dont beat me up for this one , but I dont think he will be missed. And we will do much , much better record wise. We will be in the hunt for the crown this year. ( A-10) And  a post season NIT for sure.

The problem with the team over the past few years has not been Damien (or before him Diggs),,,it was the supporting cast around them.  Our success this year is entirely dependent upon the development/improvement of last year's freshman class.  We already know what Taylor, Ware, Katuka, Edwards can do.  If last years frosh turn into consistent, A-10 calibre players (by no means a certainty) , we ae competative (put the top of the conference out off your heads).  If they do not, our competition will once again be for one of the last couple of seeds in the A-10 tournament.
