the other mg7/13/2017 12:12:48 AM
If we could get this guy to overlook Pennsylvania schools and Miami, and come to GW, a lot of the doubts about MoJo as a recruiter would certainly die down. This would be great!
bigfan7/13/2017 2:13:13 AM
Can't teach 6'9 258.
Isn't that a big Philadelphia program? Sounds familiar anyway.
At initial glance, sounds pretty good.
Since he has an offer, would commit immediately and enjoy his summer and senior year while going to GW, the best combination of basketball, academic and playing time choice anyone could have.
thomas7/13/2017 9:52:08 AM
Yeah BigFan, Neumann Goretti is(or maybe was) a big-time powerhouse type of school in Philadelphia that has produced lots of college players. You'd always see them playing in big tournaments/1-day events here locally or nationally through the years. Looking at the verbalcommits link that DMVPiranha posted, Marcus Littles is being pursued by a bunch of A-10 schools, along with Miami, Temple and Penn State. That's a pretty good list of schools, he'd be a great signing for GW.

Hopefully he commits this weekend.
bm9/20/2017 8:23:18 PM
Not Alie-Cox. Saw him in HS and he was a lot more energetic. I thought HS Marfo at first glance.
the dude9/20/2017 8:28:31 PM
Did Mo Alie end up on an NFL practice roster? GW could use a Mo Alie. Another Marfo, no thx. Hope this guy is more of a Mo Alie and less of a Marfo.
dmvpiranha9/20/2017 8:44:15 PM
Agree with BM. I had posted on another thread last month talking about the prospects that his game resembled Kevin's. We have been pursuing Littles fairly hard after offering him so hopefully good news is on the way. Definitely in need of a frontcourt player next year. I also still somewhat believe that Kevin didn't get much of an opportunity to progress (that Florida State game is an example even against backups that's good competition) and maybe an offseason might have helped. You can never have too many athletes but I would be satisfied with a reliable rebounder given the loss of Collin this summer.
Mo Alie got hurt in the offseason so the Colts waived him with an injury designation. Don't think any team claimed him so he'll probably end up on the practice squad. Tight end is the perfect position given how many players transitioned from college basketball to the NFL successfully at that position and Cox has the right build. Antonio Gates (Kent State) is probably the most recent success story coming from a mid-major (and recently set the NFL record for most touchdowns by a tight end), but Tony Gonzalez (California), Jimmy Graham (Miami FL), Martellus Bennett (Texas A&M), and Julius Thomas (Portland State) are other examples.

GW and Marcus both have a tremendous opportunity today. Glad he has realized it and jumped at the chance to spend the next four years in a program that offers lots of playing time available for him, a young coach with enthusiasm and relatability, big time tournaments in plush locations,a wonderful, safe location a quick train ride from home, great academics and NBA is there for him, along with a great degree.
Just ask last year's big man, Tyler Cavanaugh who graduated from GW this spring and now has a guaranteed NBA contract with Atlanta.
GW has everything Marcus and his family could ask for. What a terrific decision for a great four years. Smart choice, Marcus.
A warm welcome to you and your family from the GW Colonial family!

Sounds exciting. He comes from a decent program in Philly. Offers from competing schools shows we're fishing in the right waters. Watched a highlight film of him and one thing stuck out: shoots well close to the rim - but I never saw him take a step and go for the dunk. Not once in a highlight reel. Not sure if that should be a concern or not, but with that height, you'd hope for some ability to drive it in.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but isn't this ranking fairly comparable to Cimino coming out of HS?
gw future9/23/2017 11:39:58 PM
Thinker, why ask why? Dummy Dude is in his own little world where nothing that happens yesterday is relevant to today. He is in his own little Dummy Dude world.
the dude9/23/2017 11:47:15 PM
Somewhat Thinker, not as high, but not all that far off either. Cimino was like 25th at Center (even though he really wasn't a Center) and very few guys get Center rankings. Marfo I believe was also ranked about 25th at center. Neither was this high in the Future 150 list either. Typically theses sites only rank 25 centers, 50 at every position because there are few HS kids getting "Center" evaluations. Power Forwards, might be 10X as many nationally, and he's 23rd out of a top 50 at the position.
In all of the years I've been looking at Future 150, only other GW Signee I believe was Marfo to crack their top 150 and Littles comes in higher.
All taken of course with a large grain of salt, but for GW, this is a VERY highly regarded recruit.
My question is, is it actually a done deal? It sure appears that way.
the dude9/24/2017 12:00:54 AM
Just as point of comp, looking at this year's all signed 100-150, I see 100% BCS and mostly high BCS, unless I am misreading a logo or two. Forget GW, I don't see a single non BCS school in the entire list 100-150:

Interesting film, has a long wingspan. Very solid jump hook. Def needs to improve the conditioning. Very active defender, blocks a lot of shots. Has a nice touch around the rim. Not an explosive athlete. Doesn't dunk a lot on film, but I like that he has a variety of low post moves instead of just dunks. We saw how last year a guy just able to dunk is going to struggle at the higher level. Not a fluid mover but has pretty quick feet for a big man.

Performance: Not many guys inflicted much more interior pain than Littles did. He measured a little shorter than he's been listed but his 7-foot-1 wingspan and powerful 258 pound body allow him to play big. He's got some touch on jumpers and is a nifty passer to boot.
Recruitment: Penn State has offered early.

Check out this video on Marcus. It shows that although he's not athletic, he is exceptionally sound fundamentally. His post game is better than Marfo or Smith (C), not relying on dunks all the time. Great at following up rebounds, and doesn't lunge to block shots, retaining his position. Because of his physical dimensions, he'll be ready to play as a freshman.
It will interesting to follow him in high school this year to see if his stock rises.
grb9/24/2017 10:21:17 AM
I will keep this board posted on progress this year. Littles teammate and starting point guard mom and dad are friends of mine so plan on attending games. Will try to get you some video
gwmaven9/24/2017 11:18:30 AM
GRB why didn't you get the point guard for us?
bobo9/24/2017 12:17:24 PM
Marfo did look real good in his HS highlight videos too with above average footwork and low post moves. I do like the wingspan for Littles as he plays bigger than his 6-9 size. We'll see how well he can move defensively. So many teams pull their C out if he can hit jumpers (see Larsen from 2 years ago) and big, slow Cs get exposed defensively. But GW certainly needs size.
Good class so far. I'd like to see ESPN or Rivals with a more detailed scouting report on some of the players from an outside observer. Hopefully that will come in the spring.
notta hater9/24/2017 12:35:04 PM

Been a very long time since GW has had a Big with this type of WINGSPAN.
Not meant as a direct comp, just a style match, Bonzie Colson. Skilled post moves and touch with exceptionally long arms. Thick body, not an uber elite athlete and a tad undersized in the height department, with super long arms and a lot of skill around the rim.
danjsport9/25/2017 11:52:16 AM
Serious question- can this guy dunk? He's big, and I'm excited about him. But everything in the first 2 minutes of the video above is a layup or a shot moving away from the hoop. It will be interesting to see how that plays at the next level. Also interesting to see if he can pass the ball.
long suffering fan9/25/2017 12:59:14 PM
I chuckled when you asked if he could dunk, Danj, as I was thinking the same thing, but if you stayed with the video long enough, he does slam one home. Didn't really learn much from the video other than to learn he can lay them in and rebound against smaller opponents. Would have liked to see some outside shooting(there may have been one shot) and seen more of the passing game. Doesn't mean he can't do it, but that the video didn't show it
ziik the senile old man9/25/2017 1:22:24 PM
My eyeglasses need some new duct tape, but, with them skewed a bit as they are, he is damn near certain K. Marfo, trying to sneak back into GW.
What about Jess Settles? Can't he come on in as a 17th year senior transfer?
And, JJ? How much eligibility has he used?
the dude9/25/2017 1:31:10 PM
Not ony does he dunk in the video, buts its a good old fashioned throw down dunk. The rest of the videos do look like the NCAA in the years the dunk was outlawed!
the mv9/25/2017 2:11:22 PM
Welcome to Foggy Bottom Marcus. Assuming that each of these three verbals signs in November, I love the fact that MoJo is securing these players so early. Of course, they need to be the right players and they need strong coaching to help them develop. On the surface, I will be very happy if Marcus becomes a defensive enforcer who alters shots and makes guys thing twice about driving down the lane. Any offense will be a bonus but defense, rebounding and toughness will be what's needed. FWIW, I don't think that Collin Smith (or Colin Goss) was ever going to be that guy. Kevin Marfo certainly fit the profile coming out of high school as did Erik Copes way back when. So, you never really know until they are wearing a GW uniform.
Marcus is listed as weighing 258, 13 pounds more than Marfo, and 13 pounds moro than Toro (really..Toro at 245 as a freshman?). What's especially promising is that he appears to be very well coordinated and athletic for a player his size, with an enormous wingspan. Seemingly, another very good get.
bigfan9/25/2017 3:10:35 PM
For our own selfish excitement purposes, would like to see him dunk.
Then again, would have liked to see Kevin Larsen dunk other than bi-annually and he played quite well.
Where Marcus can make a difference is an enforcer with his size and bulk, which Kevin was not.
Along with a little short to mid-range touch, that would really be helpful.
And remember again, KL wasn't a three-point shooter when he came to GW, but wound up making several big ones.
colonials379/26/2017 10:42:46 AM
In this short clip alone, you can see 3 dunks from Marcus.
Marcus Littles dunks
the dude9/26/2017 2:44:14 PM
Long arms, huge wingspan, the most important attribute for a big around the basket. Its a testament to Kevin Larsen, what a great player he was with a short wingspan, did it instead with skill and guile. I think Marcus shows signs of having all 3.

Seems as if ESPN's data/scouting reports on prospects outside of the top 100/150 is lacking now. Probably has something to do with all of the layoffs at the company. 247 seems to be the most detailed site now.

Very proud of this:
“My mom, she’s a school teacher, so [when I told her] ‘GW’ [she] was like ‘academics!’ ... and going wild,” the senior said. “A lot of networking, you’re in the middle of D.C., so she loved it."
This is really a lot of what we have to sell and personally try to emphasize it in pitches here.
This is also really good to hear about Marcus:
"We’re in the gym everyday just like everybody else. I can’t even describe how hungry we are.”

If Academics, Miami and Penn State are ranked higher academically.
sdf9/28/2017 1:56:49 PM
I will say, as someone who TA'ed at (and obtained a PhD from) an enormous public school with a higher academic ranking than GW that in many ways, especially if a student isn't already an academic star or has huge time commitments outside of academics (like basketball), the smaller class sizes and additional per-student resources at a comparable high level private school can really make a difference in helping kids reach their potential. So while Penn State is a great school (and it is! Really, really great school.) it's also a lot easier to float your way through or fall through the cracks in terms of making progress toward a degree and career.
If she's a school teacher, that's the kind of thing she probably has in the back of her mind.
Miami? A great school if you want to be in finance. Though the campus itself isn't really near any fun neighborhoods.
the dude9/28/2017 6:50:11 PM
We have been up against the same few BCS schools several times, BC and Providence. However, I can't, recall winning a recruiting battle in recent years, against schools from this many BCS conferences (or any Big 10 and ACC schools?)
bobo9/28/2017 11:29:21 PM
That assumes we believe all those schools actually offered Littles. There's seems to be a vast expansion of the number of offered listed for all the college players on some of these websites. Some of them are probably true.
the mv9/29/2017 9:25:50 AM
Swan was offered by Miami. Cimino was offered by Georgia Tech (with strong late interest by Indiana). Can't recall offhand but I know we have landed a player(s) who was offered by Penn State.
Swan by Miami, Cimino by GT. Pretty foolproof system, isn't it?
bo knows9/29/2017 10:16:13 AM
Again, what cannot be discerned from verbal commits or any other internet site, is how real any offer is. There are "offers" and then there are "offers". Plenty of contingent offers out there with contingency based on academic performance, others players not committing, you committing before other players, etc. Rule of thumb if the head coach is offering it's an offer. An assistant not so much. No way to tell which of Littles offers were firm and which weren't.
But unlike the Dude, I don't value/assess recruits by whether they were offered or recruited by others but rather by whether they can play or have potential to develop. The Dude would have missed guys like McCollum, Curry and Lillard simply because the internet would have told him they were not highly recruited. Likewise, there are numerous examples of guys who were highly recruited who did not pan out as planned. It may be relevant who recruits a player but it also may not be. Again, Lesson #549 as to why all recruiting knowledge/wisdom does not reside on the internet contrary to the Dude's continued assertions otherwise.
gwmaven9/29/2017 11:55:38 AM
Bo and Dude agree with both. But rankings tend to be more accurate than not. If Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas are after a guy ranked 42, he likely will be pretty good. Yes misses happen both on the upside and the downside, but there is some precision to the system. Curry is one where the upside was missed.
the dude9/29/2017 2:25:56 PM
Might have found the answer to my own question. Mezie Offurum.

gw699/29/2017 3:50:58 PM
Dude --Don't get too excited about these recruits--I think that's the message
from the usual suspects.I can't help wonder if they were ML recruits what
would they have to say.We will never know---but---what do you think?
Oh--and MOJO isn't that hot as a recruiter.Lets not give him too much!
Could this be more predictable?I know they believe they are just being
"realistic" to temper your pro MOJO agenda. They ,of course, have no agenda.
the dude9/29/2017 3:58:55 PM
Doc, well said. Had similar thoughts.
the mv9/29/2017 3:59:23 PM
69, you're missing the point. Nobody is saying that these guys won't go on to become great players. What we are saying is that it's not worth getting overly worked up by the world of internet reports. Reports can be inaccurate. As discussed, "offers" can come in many different forms. And, even in accurate, well-intended reports, there is no guarantee that the information will bear out as forecast. Plus, it has been proven so many times here that the caliber of program who we beat out on a player may have little if any bearing on anything.
I'm very excited by the three 2018 signees. I'm just not going to act like this automatically translates to an NCAA tournament team two years from now. Hope it does, but we just have no idea right now.
