Bringing back the Thomas special.  Mason led 16th ranked Louisville on the road, at the half.  Close game, late 2nd half

the dude11/12/2017 9:18:04 PM

Mason lost, but close game.  They look good.  Howard is hanging with Indiana! Either Howard isn't as terrible as expected, Indiana is going to be awful this year, or both.

thomas11/12/2017 9:21:14 PM

You beat me to it!! HA!  I didn't think we'd need this so early in the year. I wasn't aware that George Mason was playing Louisville, until I heard it discussed on the local news. The boxscore showed that Mason pretty much has a 5 man rotation!! They had 3 guys off the bench playing 10 or 11 minutes and not contributing much of anything.

Howard is currently playing at Indiana on the Big 10 Network. They trail by 8 points late in the 1st half. They've been even with IU for most of the 1st half. Some of you were concerned that GW struggled with what appears to be a below average MEAC team, but the fact that Howard has been competitive with Indiana up to this point shows that they may not be that bad. Howard's freshman guard R.J. Cole is playing well against IU, as he did against GW.

the dude11/12/2017 9:41:00 PM

Indiana did lose at home by 21 to Indiana St.  Starting to pull away, but Howard making a run right back! Howard basically missing all their 3's, made contested 3's against us.  Howard looks athletic, and way too short, just as they did against us.

Ewing won his first game today.

Any standouts from the first weekend Thomas? What do you see as the storylines of the new season?  Kentucky has struggled with 2 low majors.  Watch out for Xavier this year, and of course, Wichita St.

thomas11/12/2017 10:08:39 PM

Yeah, Indiana may finish at the bottom of the Big 10 standings, but they still have some good talent and athleticism on their team. I wasn't aware that Archie Miller hired Bruiser Flint as an assistant, I thought B.Flint was still a head coach at a mid-major. With the way Howard shoots/makes 3's, I'd like to see how they do against MEAC teams who have a similar level of talent, they could have games in which they hit 20+ three pointers!!

Howard may make some national news outlets for a technical foul they recieved with seconds left in the 1st half. Howard got a tech for putting in a player(#22) who was not listed on the roster...Seriously!!! I don't think I've EVER seen that happen before in the NBA or college. The announcers said the same thing about never seeing that before. They showed the Howard's roster(I presume from their media guide) and the player who checked in the game is not listed anywhere.

1

the dude11/12/2017 10:18:59 PM

Howard is within 9 late in this game.  On the road, against blue blood, Big 10 Indiana.  More a reflection on Tom Crean's roster construction than Howard, but Howard is not going to be as bad as prognisticator expectations.  Charles Williams is 1 for 9 from 3, otherwise they'd be legit right there with Indiana.

dmvpiranha11/12/2017 10:33:56 PM

If only Howard was a little more efficient from the floor (Foster is a bit of a chucker), they could be a legitimate threat on a nightly basis regardless of the team they face (maybe minus teams with great height). There are some very good shooters on the team. They rebound surprisingly well for their size and are great from the free throw line. RJ Cole is a fun player to watch. If he continues to develop, he could go the James Daniel route and play for a power conference team down the road. Charles Williams seemed to foul out and have an off-night. They are also so young. As long as they can keep the team intact for two years, they could be a MEAC frontrunner. Their one true weakness might be defense, partly because of the lack of height.

The Dude,  I only saw small parts of Kentucky's game against Vermont today, at first glance it looked like they worked out a deal to get Da'Aaron Fox to leave the Sacramento Kings and return to Lexington for his sophomore year, but it was actually another stud freshman who looks like D.Fox and plays like him named Shai Gilgeous-Alexander!! Every Kentucky game is on national TV, so I'll get a closer look at them during the week.

About Wichita State, they've supposedly moved up a few levels to the AAC, yet are still expected to dominate that league the same way they've dominated the Missouri Valley Conference in previous years.

The most notable aspect of Ewing's first game was the fact that Michael Jordan and Jeff Van Gundy were in the crowd of 100's at the MCI/Verizon/Capital One Arena!!!

DMVPiranha, excellent points!! Foster was chucking up 3's no matter what the situation was. The announcers mentioned that Howard's coach told them that Foster was an all-time great shooter and encourages him to Shoot It whenever he can. Like you, I'm interested to see what happens in the future with R.J.Cole, Williams and Foster(despite the erratic shooting, I think Foster will be very good down the road). Can Howard get a legit post player to compliment those 3?? Are those 3 going to get poached by BCS schools at some point? I think Howard can make some noise in the MEAC this year because they'll be able to overwhelm some teams with their 3-point shooting and their drives/attacks to the basket.

ziik the senile old man11/12/2017 11:38:47 PM

I noticed Cole, as he seemed to be a favorite of the refs. GW hacked, the refs gave Cole the ball, told him to take 2.

Howard seemed real skinny, but, nice young team, for sure. They came to win, just did not quite have the juice.  Absent Yuta, they 'd have taken the game.

thomas11/13/2017 10:19:48 AM

Interesting schedule for a weekday as one A-10 will tip off at noon eastern today, and another will tip off at 11:30 eastern.

Jacksonville State(I don't believe this is the same team that lost to Georgetown yesterday, but it could be) at Richmond  noon  on the channel formely known as Comcast SportsNet in DC - Why the noon start time on a Monday?? Is Richmond observing Veteran's Day today?

North Florida at VCU   7  on MASN

Rhode Island at Nevada  11:30PM on ESPNU

Rider at Xavier  8:30 on Fox Sports 1

LaSalle at Penn   7 - I'm not sure if this game will be televised

Ziik,  even though Cole is a freshman who is just 2 games into his college career, he seems to have already picked up a Melo Trimble/James Harden-like knack of convincing the refs that he's getting fouled all the time. Through these 2 games Cole is averaging 25PPG on 34% shooting, those numbers should sound familiar to those of here who remember the 1999-2000 Colonials!!!

bc11/13/2017 10:26:41 AM

The Howard game would have been a lot closer if Williams was on - didn't see the stats but it seemed like he was 3 for 15 late in the game.  Cole shoots mostly 3's so maybe 34% isn't horrible.   Thomas, you're not that old are you? smile

1

ziik the senile old man11/13/2017 10:45:38 AM

Thanks, Thomas, you always are on point.

I was wondering why the guy always seemed to be at the line. Heck, he does look confident and cool.

the mv11/13/2017 11:37:55 AM

Thomas, I sometimes feel that GW fans are a tortured, paranoid lot.  Nobody heightens that sentiment more than The Washington Post.  Today, I read about Ewing's homecoming which you say was attended by ML and Van Gundy as the article points out.  It also mentions Mourning, Mutombo, Otto Porter and Scott Brooks all in attendance.  It then goes on to say that also in attendance was Ewing's high school coach though it fails to mention Mike Jarvis by name.  It was ridiculous the way this was written...everyone by name plus Patrick Ewing's former high school coach.  Sure, it could have mentioned Mike by name and even given a brief GW shout-out but The Post wasn't having any of that.  Nor did they mention Tyler's first NBA points or where he graduated from the day before.

Not that I'm tortured or paranoid.

1

ziik the senile old man11/13/2017 12:13:48 PM

MV, get over it, man.

There (allegedly) was The First Coming. (JC)

Then, there was The Second Coming. (Patrick to GU)

Now, we have The Third Coming. (Patrick as Head Coach)

I have nothing against Patrick at all. He already is a Saint.

So, let's not whine. It's almost blasphemy.

3

the mv11/13/2017 12:28:18 PM

Not really meant to be a whine Ziik.  Just struck me as being very odd that Mike Jarvis could not be mentioned by name whereas all of these other people were.

Incidentally, I had a chance to meet and talk with Patrick many years ago.  Shy to the point of being very standoffish and disengaged at first but once I said a few things that resonated with him, he was very talkative and much more pleasant.

bc11/13/2017 12:33:24 PM

Michael Jordan was there, now was ML and Mike Jarvis there as well.  I'm confused.

the mv11/13/2017 1:01:58 PM

From the article, Mike Jarvis was there.  No reference to Lonergan.

1

a poster has no name11/13/2017 1:05:50 PM

Richmond looks baaaaad this year, might be good for our win total!

1

ziik the senile old man11/13/2017 1:20:37 PM

I used the collective ' us ' MV, with the whining comment. I am not singling you out at all on this.

And, I am sure you're correct, that Patrick is a great guy. He's a true Saint!

It's just a shame The Washington Post is so new. If it were around in Biblical times, there'd be only one Truth, only one True Religion. Whichever one it endorsed, of course.

thomas11/13/2017 1:23:08 PM

Richmond trails this game 59-29(no, that's not a misprint) early in the 2nd half. I understand that Richmond's leading scorer(Fore) is out, but this performance is horrific!!

BC,  my grandparents told me about that 1999-2000 GW team. I heard the story of how they beat a real good Maryland team at some place called the MCI Center!! HA!

1

thomas11/13/2017 1:41:14 PM

About Patrick Ewing and GW, I recall years back someone here posted that Ewing's daughter played volleyball(mid 2000's??) at GW and Ewing would attend her home games sometimes. Maybe the daughter should convince him to schedule GW!!!

MV,  I agree that the Post failing to mention Mike Jarvis' name is wrong. I got my information about those in attendance from a twitter account associated with Georgetown, so I wouldn't expect them to mention Jarvis. If they did mention Jarvis, they'd probably say he's a former coach at St.John's!!!

Richmond is going to lose this game by 30+ points unless the Jacksonville State coach has some mercy in his heart and Calls Off The Dogs!!!

1

the dude11/13/2017 2:32:13 PM

Wow, Richmond.   Yikes.

bc11/13/2017 2:50:07 PM

I had to go look it up.  Jacksonville State lives in Jacksonville AL.   Not the same as Jacksonville.

xac11/13/2017 5:09:36 PM

Yes, JSU is in my neck of the woods. It's part of the Alabama state university system, and I have a few friends who matriculated there. It's a beautiful campus with about 8,000 undergraduates, and also known more for football than basketball (had some pretty good football teams in the past for a school their size).

the dude11/13/2017 6:45:10 PM

Perhaps the 2nd biggest story in Alabama at the moment?

2

the dude11/13/2017 7:24:13 PM

Thomas, you see this Providence game against 16th ranked Minny?  Man, Ed Cooley keeps on cruising on.  The great recruiting, keeps doing it over and over.

gw alum abroad11/13/2017 8:04:17 PM

St Joe's plays UIC later tonight. Man, does that matchup throw my meds out of whack!

1

the dude11/13/2017 9:10:20 PM

For you fan of the non BCS great programs, check out Wichita St on CBSN.  America's 2nd greatest Coach is loaded this year.   A legit national title contender, just like a certain program last year.

buff and blue bandit11/13/2017 9:15:28 PM

Not an NCAA game, but an "other game" for sure.

Hawks up 50-45 on Pelicans at the half and Tyler has seen the most minutes of his NBA career with 7.

In 7 minutes he has gone 2 for 3 for 4 points and 4 rebounds.

Let's see if those minutes double in the second half.

2

the dude11/13/2017 9:20:57 PM

It sure does.  Wow, way to go TC!!

ziik the bomb thrower11/13/2017 9:53:01 PM

Thanks for that, BC

I had thought Jacksonville State was across town from Jacksonville. I have no idea why.

I do recall a couple great Jacksoville teams in the 70's. Lots of transfers.

dmvpiranha11/13/2017 9:55:39 PM

So happy to be seeing all the former colonials shine at all levels. Nick has 19 points on 7-12 shooting for St. Peter's against #20 Northwestern finishing up right now.

1

the dude11/13/2017 10:02:18 PM

Nick Griffin was, and remains, an exceptional shooter.  Check his FT% last season.

ziik the bomb thrower11/13/2017 10:09:33 PM

Nick could have saved ML's job, instead of going over to the dark side.

He just would not make his shots. What a meanie. No wonder ML got angry, swore, had to go to confession twice a day.

I enjoyed watching Nick give it a try.

1

xac11/13/2017 10:25:38 PM

TC played important minutes tonight. in 18 minutes, he had 16 pointe (4-4 on 3 pointers) and 6 rebounds. He came in with 4 minutes left and Atlanta down by down by 5, and immediately made a steal that led to a layup and then made his 4th 3 of the night. Announcers were effusive about his performance. Unfortunately they lost by 1. When he was in, he either guarded Anthony Davis or Demarcus Cousins, two REALLY large guys, and did really good job on defense.

2

bigfan11/13/2017 10:38:10 PM

What a big night for Tyler!

Huge numbers for those minutes. Takes advantage of his opportunities.

Where was the game televised?

May have to start subscribing to whatever service has all the NBA games.

xac11/13/2017 11:22:57 PM

The games are streamed live on the FoxSportsGo App, but availability is regional. Since I live in the Southeast, I get all of the Hawks games..   just lucky that's where Tyler landed.

1

the dude11/13/2017 11:23:42 PM

From his first Colonial minute, to his very last, we all saw what a unique, warrior TC is.  You combine that with a legit NBA range 3, in today's NBA style of iso and spread the court?    Sure sounds like an NBA career to me.

That is some game tonight, awesome!

1

thomas11/14/2017 1:11:29 AM

The Dude,  I didn't see any of Providence-Minnesota(I know Minnesota won by double digits), but I'm not surprised that Cooley has them playing well. We saw Cooley was legit last season when he lost Kris Dunn and Bentil(who pretty much carried the 2014-2015 team), and had most of his lesser/role players from that 2015 team elevate their games and still maintain a high level of play. Despite the loss, I expect this year's Providence team will be very good because they return most of the key players from last year's team.

Ziik,  I also assumed Jacksonville State and Jacksonville was a UNC-NC State/South Carolina-South Carolina State/Florida-Florida State type of situation too, I had no idea that one of them was in Alabama. Thanks BC and XAC!! Jacksonville State is legit, Jacksonville appears to be a punching bag for BCS schools. Jax State made the NCAA tourney last year and the coach has a stream of D-1 transfers, including a local guard named Jamal Gregory who played for Vaughan Jones at Coolidge. There probably going to have a hard time getting BCS schools to play them from now on.

XAC,  thanks for the updates on Cavanaugh!! The fact that he did this in a close game on the road and not in garbage time of a blowout is a great sign. Hopefully, this performance allows Cavanaugh to be in the Hawks rotation for the rest of the season. Former St.Joe's star DeAndre Bembry is also on the Hawks(I believe he's injured now), but Cavanaugh may have just beat him out for minutes off the bench. Since you are in "Hawks territory" and can see all of their games, you can give us updates here whenever he plays. It's good that we can now include Hawks games as 'Other Games Of Interest'!!

BigFan,  NBA League Pass is the subscription package in which you can see all the NBA games. They also have free previews at various times during the season. I'll let the board know the next time the NBA has a free preview week or weekend, so everyone can see the Tyler and the Hawks. The Hawks may not have any nationally televised games, so the only time you can catch them(if you aren't in Hawks territory) is when they play your local team. I believe the Hawks will play the Wizards 3 or 4 more times this year, so those of us in the D.C.area can see him again.

Rhode Island and Nevada are playing now on ESPNU, they've trailed by 6-10 points for most of the game, but have made runs to make it close behind their strong guard play. A couple of their frontcourt players appear to have gotten a lot better which should help make up for the losses of Martin and Kuran Iverson.

2

the dude11/14/2017 1:19:23 AM

Thomas, URI storming back.  Fatts Russell, that dude looks like a beast in the making.  Yet another URI Guard recruit of immediate impact.  Embarrassment of riches.

EC Matthews still looks like an NBA player to me.  Prototypical size, wingspan, shooting ability.  Rhode Island is going to be a tough cookie in the A10 this year.

1

thomas11/14/2017 1:57:07 AM

Yeah, that Rhode Island freshman guard from Philadelphia is going to be real good. He made big plays when he was in the game. Him and Dowtin will be a great backcourt next year. Rhode Island lost 88-81, but it's not a bad loss, Nevada is an NCAA tourney team. Nevada had too much size for Rhode Island.

1

thomas11/14/2017 2:05:04 AM

Moments after the Rhode Island-Nevada game ended, I saw a graphic showing that Nick Griffin scored 19 for St.Peter's in a 9 point loss at #20 Northwestern.

1

the dude11/14/2017 2:15:43 AM

Tough road loss, Nevada is going to be really good.  URI can be exploited some down low, agreed.

That kid Fatts is good! Explosive! Him and Dowtin, really Good backcourt the next few years, indeed Thomas.

1

bc11/14/2017 3:28:26 AM

Jacksonville State beat Richmond  94 - 61

St Joseph's beat UIC 86-82 in OT.

1

mentzinger11/14/2017 12:22:56 PM

Yep, Griffin with a game-high 19 in a loss at #20 Northwestern.

St. Joe gave up 98 in its opener at Toledo and lost 98-87.

dmvpiranha11/14/2017 12:39:19 PM

Kind of coincidental that St. Joe's has opened their season with the same two teams we played against in the CBI last year (though we beat Toledo and lost to UIC).

bigfan11/14/2017 3:43:21 PM

Thought we were explicity told that Griffin, a fine young man, was another useless recruit.

gw050911/14/2017 5:59:28 PM

Not going to take the bait.

Happy for Nick and looks like he had a great night against a great team.

3

the dude11/14/2017 6:12:03 PM

Our Colonials, beat Howard by the same margin as blue Blood Indiana.  Howard is now 3,000 miles West to play Gonzaga! That's some brutal schedule to start the year.

You don't get to see #1 vs #2 very often, they are playing tonight.  Kansas vs Kentucky too.  Juggernaut night in the NCAA.  Davidson playing the always tough UNC-W, and Dukes take on VMI.  A10 had a brutal OOC last year, would be nice to see a slightly better performance this year for the league!

1

papadopoulos11/15/2017 2:35:39 AM

The other A10 teams too care of business.  Saw  Paulie game against Princeton.  Not a good one played less, missed shots. Davidson looks like the league sleeper.  Don't sleep on them.

2

free quebec11/15/2017 9:14:35 AM

Ready to feel old? Duke is starting a freshman named Gary Trent, Jr.   he’s the son of Colonial-killer Gary Trent, who kicked our ass in both the pre-season NiT championship game and the postseason NIT in the same year.

the mv11/15/2017 9:43:19 AM

Yup FQ.  That hit me last night.

thomas11/15/2017 12:09:25 PM

Butler at Maryland   8:30 on Fox Sports 1  - Most of you may have thought that Paul Jorgenson would only be coming back to this area once to face Georgetown in Big East play, but he'll be in College Park today facing Maryland as part of the Big East/Big 10 Gavitt Games challenge.

Gary Trent Jr. was one of the top high school seniors in the nation last year, you guys know if/think he ever considered going to Ohio U like his father...The Shaq of the MAC?? Was Ohio U among his final choices?

2

the dude11/15/2017 7:52:11 PM

AU was leading West VA for much of this half! West VA got blown out the other day, but they are ranked. Cimino's only stats so far are 3 fouls.

Seton Hall is ranked this year and starting to take it to Indiana.  Indiana might be legit awful this year.

Anyone catch those 2 heavyweight battles last night? Thoughts?

papadopoulos11/15/2017 9:28:12 PM

Rough half for Paulie. Former GW recruit Huerter looks good.

2

thomas11/15/2017 9:52:21 PM

Jorgenson actually started the game at shooting guard for Butler, even though his backcourt mate Kamar Baldwin seems to be more of a shooting guard. PJ got subbed out early in the game and had a difficult 1st half as Papadopoulos pointed out. He started the 2nd half on the bench and hasn't checked into the game yet. The guy who replaced PJ(Thompson) has played well. I believe Thompson is a freshman and a local guy. Butler is playing hero ball/taking bad shots and are down by double digits to Maryland early in the 2nd half

2

papadopoulos11/15/2017 10:57:51 PM

Two points for Paulie. No assists   One for five from field. Butler is much worse this year, no depth.   Lost most of their team to graduation.

the dude11/15/2017 11:09:43 PM

Catch the 2nd half Thomas? What do you make of MD? Butler?

Did you see Seton Hall pummeling Indiana in the first game? We've been following the Hall the last few years, ranked now, what do you make of SH this year?

Creighton is about to finish off #20 Northwestern on the road. The Big East, just cleans up in the OOC every year.

thomas11/15/2017 11:17:55 PM

I'm not sure what to make of this game...Is Butler much worse this year like Papadopoulos wrote or is Maryland real good!! Butler still has Baldwin, Martin and Wideman who were key contributors last year, Baldwin and Martin still have very questionable shot selection/decision making. I thought their newcomers(or guys who didn't play much last year) like McDermott, Thompson and Fowler played well and will be very good for Butler this year.

The Dude,  I'll watch Kentucky closer when they play their next game on ESPN, but it looks like Calipari is actually going to depend a lot on upperclassmen this year. Duke starts 4 freshman and Grayson Allen, Coach K now has a Calipari-like team. I know Coach K has always brought in stud freshman, but I don't recall 4 of them starting for him.

1

the dude11/15/2017 11:31:19 PM

Thomas, he's got a loaded class coming in next year too.  Recall what K would bemoan all of this? Such a hypocrite, at least Cal has a lower BS quotient!

No love from the voters for Creighton who returns Foster and is pretty loaded.  Handled Northwestern all night on their court. Impressive. I think I agree with Papadalaous, Butler was much deeper last year.

Ewing going to succeed at G'town? What do you make of the Chris Mullin roster development at St Johns so far??

thomas11/15/2017 11:59:01 PM

I didn't see the Seton Hall-Indiana game, but it's as if the Delgado/Rodriguez/Carrington SR class turned things around and created a great legacy for themselves after GW punished them at Smith Center during their sophomore year. Remember that looked like a ho-hum win for GW at the time, but as the season went on it turned out to be a very good win because Seton Hall kept getting better. That senior class will be historic for Seton Hall because they resurrected the program.

I mentioned in my previous post that I wasn't quite sure what to make of Maryland or Butler in this game, but it does look like Anthony Cowan has made a significant leap as a sophomore and can be 1st Team All-Big 10. He's probably a better all-around player than Melo Trimble ever was. I believe Cowan had 25 points on 8 shot attempts!!! Why didn't the grad transfer Obi get in the game for Maryland?? I'm hoping he's injured, I don't want to believe that he's regressed to the point to where he isn't good enough to get off the bench.

Coach K gave in years ago and started bringing in 1-and-done's, but he usually has 1 or 2 of them who start with several upperclassman, I don't recall him having a team like this where he has mostly freshman starting.

Patrick Ewing got lucky because Ole Miss(or another fledgling SEC school) fired their coach this past offseason which allowed his star freshman(from D.C.) to fall into his lap, so Georgetown may not be as bad as many have predicted. Also, since Georgetown backed out of an OOC tournament in which they would've had a game against Michigan State and 2 other BCS teams, they're going to have one of the worst OOC schedules in NCAA history. Syracuse is the only legit team they'll face. It will be interesting to see what happens when they start Big East play with an 11-1 type of record, will the WEAK OOC schedule give them confidence to play well or are they just gonna get pounded when they start seeing the likes of Villanova, Xavier and Marquette??

1

the dude11/16/2017 1:14:04 AM

Central Arkansas leads UCLA 90-86 in OT.  Amazing.

Who is the star Freshman on G'town?  I like the idea of seeing these guys stick around DC.  Time for GW to land a few, Balt, DC, and International has been in the past and remains THE formula for a GW winning product.

thomas11/16/2017 1:45:01 AM

Jamarko Pickett is Georgetown's star freshman. He actually went to a D.C.public school(Eastern) then attended prep school committed to-decomitted from Ole Miss, and then chose Georgetown over Maryland as a last minute signing in July. Antwan Walker is another good freshman they have from D.C., he attended H.D.Woodson. That H.D.Woodson team went undefeated(or only loss 1 game) 2 years ago.

Even if UCLA loses this game, at least they'll be in the news for what they're doing on the court instead of the International Incident that 3 of their players caused recently!!!

I should've posted this earlier, but were you or anyone else watching Joel Embiid score 46 POINTS against the Lakers on ESPN!!! Some of you talked about watching Cavanaugh play for the Hawks, you guys need to watch the Sixers with Embiid and Ben Simmons whenever you can.

1

the dude11/16/2017 2:00:33 AM

UCLA hung on something like 106-103.  To a team picked to finish in the 300s!  Making headlines!

I didn't se any of it but I did see this: Joel Embiid is the first NBA player with 40+ points, 7+ assists and 7+ blocks in a game ... since Julius Erving.   15 Boards too.  Simmons is a beast.  Imagine if Okafor had not busted and Fultz ... well too soon on local product Fultz, but yikes, looks like Anthony Bennett levels through 10 games.

notta hater11/16/2017 7:51:25 AM

Thomas as I noted in another post - Coach K does not have another senior on his entire roster much less his top 8 players. To top that off his fall 2018 class already includes a projected one and done. We have crossed the rubicon. Back to the games however - it's going to be interesting to see how Maryland and Indiana look in the Big-10 league play and how FSU and Wake look in the ACC now that we have a decent baseline of their teams.

ziik the tentmaker11/16/2017 9:10:25 AM

Thomas, there is such a thing as watching too much basketball, and knowing too much basketball; and it can be a dangerous thing.

You are on the threshhold of that thing. It is called senility. (My uncle ziik has it. He used to know things, too.)

Be very careful.

In the meantime, post more. Because you are the most knowledgeable and entertaining poster on the subject of basketball.

Other posters bullshit. Still others post about the posters who bullshit. Some come here simply to demean and torment guys, because they really miss the 4th grade playgrounds, and playing dodgeball, etc.

Thomas. You are The Basketball Man.

Seriously, thanks. Post more.

First, the Big East's success in the out-of-conference season is right about where you would expect to find it.  Based on won-loss record, the Big East had the third best record of all conferences last year, and had the fourth best record of all conferences in the preceding three years.  Prior to that, it had the best record, which was the last season of the old Big East with Syracuse, Pittsburgh, etc.

Now, onto Coach K.  The Coach K is a hypocrite assertion simply reeks of ignorance.  To buy into this assumes that anyone who changes and evolves with the times is a hypocrite.  Duke under Coach K was about the last program where players who could leave early for the NBA did so.  Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, Johnny Dawkins, Shane Battier, Danny Ferry...all four year players.  The first Duke players to ever leave early were Corey Maggette and William Avery.  And, Coach K was very much against anyone leaving early, particularly someone who wasn't super-talented like Avery.  Next came a change in the rules that forced high school players to delay entering the NBA draft for one year past their graduation.  This created a generation of one and dones, guys who had little interest in college but who had little choice outside of playing overseas or sitting out a full year.  Coach K resisted this but understood that this rule meant that the horses were out of the barn.  A perfect example was Elton Brand who thought about bolting after a year but was convinced to stay a second year.  That decision led to Brand being selected #1 in the draft.  But by then, Coach K knew he could no longer keep very gifted players four years. Finally, the last trend was that the most competitive programs, the ones who were seemingly in contention to win national championships annually, were not only not hesitating bringing in one and dones, but were embracing the strategy (see Calipari, John).  You can not lose sight of the fact that Coach K's goal is to win championships.  He had the foresight to realize that he couldn't continue thinking that anyone who would play for him would be expected to stay 4 years or even 2 years.  Not if he wanted to land the very best players possible, which is what one needs to win championships.  This is precisely what a great coach does...he understands what's happening within the competitive landscape and he adjusts his thinking accordingly.  To refer to this as hypocritical represents a failure to understand what it means to evolve with the times.

Last point, it is true that in past years, Coach K usually had several upperclassmen to supplement the youngsters on the court.  However, that model has gone away because Coach K has now been all-in with the one and dones for several years now.  The guys who see the floor at Duke (Grayson Allen being this year's exception) will almost exclusively be freshmen with maybe a few sophomores sprinkled in.

Xavier at Wisconsin  8:30 on  Fox Sports 1

Old Dominion vs. Temple   2:30  ESPN3 online - this may be part of a tournament

Hofstra at Dayton   7:30 on ESPNU

St.Louis vs. Virginia Tech  7 on ESPN2 - this may also be part of a tournament. Either way, its a chance for the A10 to pick up a good OOC win

South Alabama at LaSalle  7

The Dude, was that a home game from UCLA?? I assume by the late start time it was, but I saw it posted somewhere as a home game for Central Arkansas. St.John's plays Nebraska tonight on FS1, they are an 8 or 9 point favorite in this game which may indicate that Mullin has a strong team or Nebraska is terrible!! I think Mullin has done a pretty good job when you look at the mess he inherited.

Notta,  I know Coach K went the Calipari route years ago, but it was still surprising for me to see him starting 4 freshman. Despite recruiting the best of the best, K always seems to have at least 3 upperclassman starters who are good enough to start over most of his 5-star freshman. With Calipari, if his 5-star recruits aren't NBA material as freshman, they seem to be forced out the door!!

I heard at mass that the Pope wants to name Coach K a saint during his lifetime.

The only glitch is, is he St. K, or St. Kczxyciakcb?  His name needs to be acceptable to the masses, who will need to spell it.

He will be St. Coach K.

Patron saint of stockbrokers and bankers, sports agents and sneaker salesmen. (Leather sneaks only.)

Ah yes, Joel Embiid. Another recruit ML failed to land, along with 2nd-team Preseason All-American Bonzie Colson.

Joel ordered several of my shirts. Size 5X, so, I remember him.

Joel was coming to GW, until I advised him it was not the school for him.

the dude11/16/2017 5:09:29 PM

Thomas, they do look pretty good! That games was in a tourney I believe.  UCLA very nearly lost!

#15 Xavier vs Wisconsin is an intriguinig game.  We play Xavier this year, that is going to be a blood bath that makes FSU look like a gentle beating.

the dude11/16/2017 5:56:19 PM

ESPN2 has Va Tech vs SLU at 7pm. Good chance to see if SLU is for real, split opinion on them it seems.

the dude11/16/2017 7:48:25 PM

Thomas, you called it.  St Johns is on there way and Ponds is indeed legit.

SLU looking good vs Va Tech.  Dayton is also on, ESPNU

thomas11/16/2017 8:44:39 PM

Yeah, St.John's dominated Nebraska for the entire game, not only is Ponds a great player, St.John's has great athleticism with Bashir and the Arizona transfer Simon. SJU's big man Owens had 6 or 7 blocks. The Virginia Tech-St.Louis game is part of a 4-team tournament at Madison Square Garden, the winner will face Providence or Washington. St.Louis' highly touted freshman Goodwin has played very well in this game, STL is now up by 12 with about 10 minutes left, they've had a double digit lead for a lot of the 2nd half. Their newcomers appear to be as good as advertised.

the dude11/16/2017 9:08:48 PM

SLU does look good, they are going to be a force in the A10 in the years ahead, just as you predicted Thomas. Tech has crept back but man, I think the people putting SLU around 8th-9th A10 were way off.

Eager to see Xavier, they are going to be a legit contender this season.

the dude11/17/2017 12:44:46 AM

Ill St defeats Final 4 team South Carolina.   Mason down at the half came back to win against Binghamton(phew)

Dayton lost to Hofstra tonight.  See, not replacing Core 4s, leaving behind bare cupboards usually lead to struggles for the next Coach.  ML had to go through it at GW too.  Feel free to call that a narrative, I'd call it observable fact.

the dude11/17/2017 3:46:12 PM

UVA is unranked, sort of sliding downwards the last 2 years?  That should be a fun matchup.  Would be another good win for the A10 if VCU can get it done.

thomas11/17/2017 6:38:02 PM

Virginia beat VCU by 9 or 10, I didn't see any of the game, but I was also surprised to see that Virginia was unranked. I would rank them based solely on the fact that Tony Bennett ALWAYS has his guys playing hard-nosed defense. They've lost very good players(Brogdon, Justin Anderson, Darion Atkins) for the last 2 or 3 seasons and always come back with a strong team.

Virginia Tech is playing Washington right now and has led by as much as 30 early in the 2nd half, so St.Louis beating them should end up being a very good OOC win for them and the conference. St.Louis beating Providence tonight would be an even better win. Temple looks like they are a lot better this year and they return a lot of guys who lost to GW last season, GW could be in for a long night(or afternoon) when they come here.

ziik the senile old man11/17/2017 7:22:30 PM

Thomas, do you have a site of your own?

If not, can you post here, 24/7, and drive out all the crappy posters?

Life would be a whole lot better, as would college basketball.

If you cannot do that, keep posting. Nice work, as usual.

For the 'it could always be worse file'... Fordham looked real bad against FSU. Missed the start but caught most of the game on TV, by around 10 minute mark in the second half Fordham had scored just 20 points, had 22ish turnovers, trailed by 25 points, and was 0-15 from the floor in the half (they scored I think 3-4 points in ten minutes off free throws).

Final score was 67-43 FSU.

At least GW showed (brief) signs of life in the second half.

the dude11/17/2017 8:54:27 PM

Thomas, not ranked, ESPN predicted them 13th best this year though.  UVA, indeed look good again.  Also, echo Ziik's thoughts.  Imagine, a board where people discuss our team and others.  The gaul!

GWG, FSU is going to do that to a lot of teams this year.  Last year in DC, they were up 30 against us with a few minutes left.  The same asshole, and yes you are an asshole, I am tired of biting my tongue in every thread, claimed last year's game was closer, we were losing to Florida St last season 67-38 with a few minutes to go.  This year, in their building, we twice cut big leads in half, in the 2nd half.  I'd take that effort any day over last year's drubbing.  We had 38 points and were down down 30 the 4 minute to go mark, totally demoralizing.  This year, not just signs of life GWG, but the ability to score against a very difficult team.  Blown out of the game in DC last year. Yes, FSU was better roster, so was GW.  I found our game mildly encouraging, all things considered.

Speaking of blowouts, Providence is up 58-27 on SLU.

the dude11/17/2017 8:55:48 PM

Ed Cooley needs to be on a short list of America's best Coaches. What a job he's done at Providence.

thomas11/18/2017 1:55:15 PM

Ziik, use the Ignore function for the guys you don't want to hear from!! I don't have my own site, what I post on here is elementary compared to guys who run sites!! Thanks for the kind words though.

GWG,  I agree with you, some posters on here were alarmed by how GW looked against FSU, but they need to take into account the high level of athleticism, height and talent that FSU has. In most cases, FSU's abundance of athleticism/talent is going to be overwhelming to teams from lower conferences like GW and Fordham who do not have the horses to compete with them for 40 minutes.

The Dude, I agree about last year's game with FSU being much worse. GW was out of that game at the first TV timeout. At least GW should some fight in the 2nd half of this year's game and may have put a little bit of fear into FSU. That was unfortunate what happened to St.Louis last night againt Providence, but at least the got a win against Virginia Tech on Thursday night. The announcers mentioned that Cooley said that this was his deepest team since he's been at Providence.

About VCU-Virginia, I've got to salute Tony Bennett for agreeing to play at VCU again. In his first or second year at Virginia, VCU beat him at home, and the next year Virginia won a hard fought game at VCU. Most times when a BCS coach loses to the local team from a lower rated conference, they never schedule them again.

Maryland is losing at home to Bucknell 39-27 with about 4 minutes left in the 1st half. The game is on the Big 10 Network.

the dude11/19/2017 12:37:33 AM

Close, no cigar for Bucknell.

The A10 went 4-1 today, La Salle lost to 20th ranked Northwestern, almost came all the way back from a huge deficit.  Mason beat Cal St Northridge, 3 points for Anthony Swan.

dmvpiranha11/19/2017 10:48:07 AM

Other notable former Colonials:

PJ: 16 pts 2 rbs 3 ast on 7-10 shooting (2-4 3pt) in 21 min in a 82-65 win over a good Furman team. (off the bench) He's had an up and down season thus far.

Nick: 23 pts 4 rbs 3 ast 2 stl on 8-14 shooting (4-9 3pt, 3-4 FT) in 34 min in a 70-61 win over Sacred Heart. (as a starter) Continues his hot shooting start and leads St. Peter's in scoring with just under 14 a game.

notta hater11/19/2017 12:03:37 PM

if FSU let some of those guys play football, the football team would be in the hunt for a good bowl. Those are athletic guys (they remind me of some of those DePaul teams of the late-70's and 80's).

the dude11/19/2017 1:45:56 PM

Thomas, no doubt, night and day the difference between those 2 games.

thomas11/19/2017 6:15:36 PM

The A-10 is taking it on the chin today as LaSalle lost to Boston College by about 20 and Dayton got beaten soundly by Old Dominion, the final margin was 8, but it was a lot worse than that. Both of these defeats are consolation games of tournaments. They mentioned that ODU will play VCU in a few weeks.

Notta,  that's a good suggestion, maybe Jimbo needs to start scouting the basketball team for some help!!

Now that it's looking like Nick Griffin will be St.Peter's leading scorer, I'll add his televised games to the Other Games of Interest list

thomas11/19/2017 8:28:43 PM

Nick Griffin is actually playing right now against South Alabama on ESPN3 online, it's a consolation game of the Hall of Fame Tip Off Classic. He's wearing number 0 and looks a lot stronger now.

the dude11/19/2017 11:13:43 PM

Rough day indeed for the A10 Thomas! Good slate of games tomorrow, chance to snap back.

How does the league look this year you think?  Maybe weaker at the top, but a little deeper in the middle?

thomas11/20/2017 1:14:15 AM

Fordham also lost to Tulane, 67-60. UMass beat Niagara by 25 and Rhode Island beat Holy Cross by 22 so the A-10 didn't suffer any real bad losses. VCU and Richmond(unfortunately) will be playing in neutral site tournaments tomorrow/later today. We should expect a decent showing from VCU, we need to hope that Richmond doesn't lose all their games by 30+ points!!

The Dude,  I expect the A-10 will be very similar to the last couple of years with 2 or 3 teams contending for an NCAA bid. Despite the lopsided loss to Providence, St.Louis looks to be one of the better teams in the A-10, the emergence of St.Louis should cancel out the drop off that we may see from Dayton. VCU still looks like VCU meaning they are still one of the best teams in the A-10 and an NCAA tournament team.

thomas11/20/2017 1:46:04 AM

Marquette vs. VCU   2:30 on ESPN 2  - opening round of the Maui Invitational

UAB vs. Richmond  5  - opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic

Maryland-Eastern Shore at St.Bonaventure   7

Penn State vs. Pittsburgh  9:30 on ESPN3 - the late start time for 2 schools on the east coast indicates that this may be part of the tournament

Hampton at Xavier  8:30 on Fox Sports 1
