Richmond won at Wake Forest tonight, 91-82. Wake Forest may finish near the bottom of the ACC standings again this year, but it's always good when an A-10 team beats an ACC team on the road.

By: Goo Colonials Go (68 posts) - 11/18/2015 10:30:48 PM

Good on them. They had a rough loss to JMU to open the season. Nice to see them turn it around with a good win away at a P5 school.

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 11/19/2015 12:14:15 AM

The A10 will have its stumbles, like any conference, but I like what I see so far:

- Dayton annihiliated Alabama by 32

- St. Joe's has surprised me by being really solid so far, including a 22 point over Bobby Hurley's decent Buffalo team tonight.

- UMASS upset Harvard on the road. That's a nice win. They don't seem to have much bench, but the starting five is more than capable at times.

- Richmond bouncing back from a road loss to win at Wake Forest.

- VCU thumping Radford.

- Bonnie led mid-way through the second half at Syracuse before foul trouble and lack of depth wore them down to a late collapse. With highly underrated Jaylen Adams, Dion Wright, and Marcus Posely, they will not be an easy out.

-LaSalle - who has been played Alexander Koul to our Marcus Camby the last two years - has absolutely nothing up front, but a great set of guards who will knock off some good teams this year when they are hot.

- Duquense hasn't played anyone, but with those great shooting guards, they have looked solid in limited action. Not an easy team to beat, sort of like LaSalle.

- SLU hasn't played anyone, but hasn't struggled either.  Assume they'll be better than last year as they get more experienced.

Unforutnately, Mason and Fordham look like really weak A-10 teams - but none of the other 12 look like they are going to be easy wins at this point.

We'll have to bring it every night to win.

Love the Koul-Camby analogy, FQ. All too sadly true.

BTW Hurley is not the coach at Buffalo, he left for Arizona State.

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 11/19/2015 8:12:25 AM

Ah, forgot that FC.   Thanks for the reminder.   Did his players stick around in buffalo?

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 11/19/2015 9:23:10 AM

One of Buffalo's best players(a freshman or sophomore named Shannon Evans) transferred to Arizona State with Bobby Hurley. I believe everyone else stayed at Buffalo.

By: The MV (4,915 posts) - 11/19/2015 9:44:10 AM

Saint Bonaventure is the most underrated team in the A10, and arguably among the most in the country, as far as I'm concerned.

By: Tk (258 posts) - 11/19/2015 9:51:20 AM

can Fordham just move to the patriot league already?

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 11/19/2015 1:52:02 PM

Wow.  George Mason just knocked off Ole Miss on a neutral court.  Ole Miss only committed 4 turnovers all game, but GMU outrebounded them by 15 and Ole Miss shot under 35%.

Very nice one for an A-10 bottom feeder over a mid-level SEC team.

These kinds of wins really help us.

I think the A-10 is now 4-1 against the BCS this year.

By: 2cents (32 posts) - 11/19/2015 1:54:10 PM

MV, you mean besides us, right!?

2cents, if we WERE underrated, that ship has certainly sailed by now.

George Mason plays Oklahoma State at 1 on ESPNU in the semifinal of a tournament.

VCU plays Duke at 7:30 on ESPN2. I believe that game is at Madison Square Garden.

Duquesne plays Penn State at 7, check your local listings to see if that one is televised. The site I looked at shows Duquesne as the home team and a 2.5 point favorite, after they opened as a 1 point favorite. The fact that Penn State is an underdog to what is projected to be the 9th or 10th best team in the A-10 may indicate how bad Penn State is.

By: CH (142 posts) - 11/20/2015 11:11:40 AM

Not A-10, but in the same Charleston tourney where GM got the win, Seton Hall lost to Long Beach State, costing them a matchup with UVA.

By: Mentzinger (3,646 posts) - 11/20/2015 11:47:13 AM

Watched Penn State a couple of nights ago. They are not bad.

By: NewGWFan (510 posts) - 11/20/2015 12:33:46 PM

Penn State is improving, so is Duquense.  I think the Duqes win a close one.

By: MG'14 (310 posts) - 11/20/2015 2:48:37 PM

Mason in OT against Oklahoma State. Had the chance to put it away, but ended up with a terrible last plan and had to chuck up a long 3. Shevon Thompson is going to be a handful. Good rebounder and very athletic (problem for us in the USF game). Besides that it seems that they are just shooting very well from 3.

By: Me (138 posts) - 11/20/2015 2:48:58 PM

GMU looks pretty good... headed to overtime after they blew the lead, but Grayer is a player and Thomson is huge!

By: Mentzinger (3,646 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:01:57 PM

20 and 17 for Shevon Thompson in that very surprising neutral court win for Mason. Monster numbers.

By: rocket (652 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:02:03 PM

Go figure after their first couple of games. Mason by 3 -- 71-68.

By: G-Dubber (371 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:02:34 PM

GMU wins and will likely play UVA in the final. Chance for two A10 teams to beat UVA in under a week

By: MG'14 (310 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:03:11 PM

Mason gets back-to-back impressive wins over good teams. As I said before, Shevon Thompson is going to give us lots of trouble. Athletic, good rebounder, can score.

GMU seems like they also live/die by the 3. In games they've lost they shot 17% and 20%. The games they've won they have shot 40% and 46%.

Good for the A10

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:04:59 PM

OSU's guards looked soft, soft, soft.  I don't know why, but they basically backed off the GMU guards and let them shoot or dribble whereever or whenever they wanted, and paid for it.   Very impressive of GMU to take advantage.

At any rate, one of our worst teams just knocked off Ole Miss and Oklahoma State back to back.  That publicity can only help us.  The league is well on its way to more than a 3 bid season, though still very early.

By: GW26 (267 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:05:42 PM

Crazy you can lose to Mercer and Colgate and beat Ole Miss and OSU in a 10 day span

By: The MV (4,915 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:14:11 PM

Ought to be a blast listening to Paul Hewitt "analyze" a future George Mason game.

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 11/20/2015 3:40:45 PM

Shevon Thompson could be the MVP of this tournament even if George Mason loses in the championship game against Virginia, or possibly  Long Beach State. He also had about 17 rebounds in the win against Ole Miss yesterday. I recall that S.Thompson gave GW trouble last year in the game at George Mason, but GW was still able to pull away late.

George Mason also got a strong performance from their shooting guard Grayer(I'm not sure what his first name is). He hit a bunch of 3's that ignited a run that brought Mason back from a 10-point deficit late with about 6 or 7 minutes left in the game to up by 5 or 6  late in regulation. He maybe just a freshman, I don't think he was on the team last year. They also have a freshman point guard(Livingston) who is pretty good.

I agree with FQ about the A-10 appearing to be well on it's way to more than just 3 bids. All these wins against BCS teams has got to raise the conference's metric numbers to what they were in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 when the A-10 got a combined 11 NCAA tourney bids during those years.

By: The Dude (529 posts) - 11/20/2015 7:47:59 PM

VCU taking it to Duke early.  Sizeable VCU contingent in the Garden.

GW/UVA, VCU/Duke are the A10 OOC games of the year.  GW pulled the big upset, can VCU on the neutral floor???  2 for 2 would be great for us/the league.

By: BM (5,673 posts) - 11/20/2015 8:27:06 PM

Duquesne crushing Penn State 63 to 37 with 10 min to go.  VCU up 1 at HT.

By: The Dude (529 posts) - 11/20/2015 8:27:24 PM

VCU leads Duke at the half.  Unrelated shocker, Rider up 10 on Maryland midway through 2nd half!  Game is On Big Ten Network.

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 11/20/2015 8:46:42 PM

Maryland has come back to take the lead by 2, but they don't look like a top 5 team in this game and they didn't for a lot of the Georgetown game. They miss Dez Wells leadership and intensity.

It doesn't appear as if VCU has taken a step back with Shaka leaving. Their defense has rattled Duke a bit and they've been able to get to the basket at will against Duke's tall and athletic frontcourt players.

By: The Dude (529 posts) - 11/20/2015 8:57:02 PM

Holding a 1pt lead with 35 seconds to go, end of shot clock, MD got bailed out by a phantom call on a Melo Trimble drive, total con job of a call

Agree Thomas, VCU looks like the same ol' VCU, gonna be a tough foe this year.

By: BACCAS92 (705 posts) - 11/20/2015 10:06:00 PM

Go on with your lives.  Nothing to watch here.  VCU loses.  Georgetown wins.

By: BACCAS92 (705 posts) - 11/20/2015 10:06:17 PM

Maryland wins.

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 11/20/2015 10:10:55 PM

The Dude, after Melo Trimble got that call, you could see all the Rider coaches laughing, instead of being angry because they knew the refs would give Melo the call. It did look like Melo just drove into the defender, but he has developed a James Harden-like skill of initiating contact with a defender and getting the refs to call a foul on that defender.

Duquesne beat Penn State, 78-52!! That's good and bad for GW because you have an A-10 team punishing a Big 10 team, but it may not mean a lot when GW blows them out at Smith Center next month.

During the VCU-Duke, I'm not sure I heard this correctly, but did the announcers say that NFL scouts have been showing up at VCU games to scout Mo Alie-Cox!!! Apparently, several NFL teams think he can play tight end, despite the fact that he didn't play football above the pop warner level. It would be interesting if he declared for the NFL draft after this year as a junior. VCU still gets to face Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game.

By: The Dude (529 posts) - 11/20/2015 11:21:09 PM

Acute eyes Thomas, I spotted the same set of laughter from the Rider Coaches, they pretty much said it all.

Helluva an effort from Rider.

Mo Alie to the NFL? I could see it.  Seems like the perfect blend of the right size and athletic ability, provided the NFL level hands are there.

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 11/20/2015 11:36:07 PM

Penn State got the same treatment we got when we visited Pittsburgh last year... to play Duquesne.    We got blown out, too, but when we went to that city to play Pitt, we won handily.

The Dukes are not an easy out.  I don't know if they are any tougher inside, but Colter as a senior is a hell of a guard, Mason demands defensive attention at all teams and draws the D away from everyone else, and they have a bunch of role players who can score.  They won't be consistent, but I wouldn't be surprised if they end the year a top 125 or so team, which is a strong improvement for them and the A-10.

On Oklahoma State, I didn't realize they were missing 3 of their top 7 players.  I guess that was a big factor, though GMU did beat Ole Miss the day before.

In that tourney, UVA destroyed Long Beach State by 35.  LBSU has already beaten BYU and Seton Hall this year.  Guess UVA is going to be just fine.

Also Seton Hall beat Bradley and wlll play Ole Miss for 5th in that tourney.

Other interesting scores include Texas-Arlington beating Ohio State in Columbus, Radford loses by 16 to Siena, Florida State loses Hofstra, and #16 Utah loses by 24 to Miami (FL) in Puerto Rico - perhaps opening a spot in the top 25 (for Miami before us, most likely).

And by going 2-1 today, the A-10 drops to 7-2 vs. BCS schools.

By: The Dude (529 posts) - 11/21/2015 12:53:28 AM

7-2, fantastic start.

One non no longer "A10" addition, but worth noting, unranked Xavier put a beatdown on ranked Michigan 86-70.

By: Mentzinger (3,646 posts) - 11/21/2015 6:05:31 AM

Yeah Miami definitely ahead of us, they are pounding people

Attended VCU-Duke last night (acutally there to see WI-GT -- bad outcome there -- can't believe GT lost to Radford).

VCU looked very good and gave Duke all it could handle. Didn't see much difference from the Shaka teams. Very quick, shot 3s well and did a good job on the boards, Not intimidated by Duke at all. Gonna be a tough game for WI tomorrow. Plenty of VCU fans at MSG although Duke fans their usual onbnoxious selves. On the sidelines, VCU definitely won the battle of the bands.

By: Maine Colonial (487 posts) - 11/22/2015 6:33:21 AM

The A10 is now 33-8 with the third highest conference winning percentage behind only the Pac12 and ACC. The Big East is only 23-9.

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 11/22/2015 2:27:12 PM

I'm seeing that Virginia is now a 20 POINT favorite against George Mason in tonight's game, they opened as an 18.5 point favorite. George Mason has played well in the 2 wins against Ole Miss and Oklahoma State, but I'm not sure that they can hang with Virginia, especially with a freshman point guard.

FQ mentioned that Oklahoma State was missing 3 key players(including their leading scorer Phil Forte) in the loss to George Mason. I just saw that P.Forte got hurt in their win against Towson when former recruiting target(after he transferred from Wake Forest) Adala-Moto fell on his arm while diving for a loose ball.

Georgetown was playing well and led Duke for pretty much the entire first half. I was actually thinking that Duke was overrated, but they have totally dominated Georgetown in the 2nd half. The Duke-VCU game followed this same script with Duke taking command early in the 2nd half due to their size, athleticism and length at every position.

By: MD-DC (147 posts) - 11/22/2015 5:53:13 PM

VCU almost pulls it off against Wisconsin - really thought they had it. Two losses in the tournament but two well-played games by VCU. They're going to be tough competition in the A-10.

By: Andrew EC (178 posts) - 11/22/2015 6:37:38 PM

VCU definitely looks tough.

The A-10 took down another BCS school as UMass beat Clemson, 82-65. Donte Clark, Trey Davis and Jabarie Hinds combined to score 71(25, 25, 21) of those 82 points. UMass is now 4-0. The game was played in Las Vegas, so I assume it's part of a tournament, and they may play 1 or 2 more quality teams within the next couple of days.

LaSalle beat Lafayette, 83-75,  Davidson beat Mercer, 77-71 and Duquesne lost to Pepperdine by 14. LaSalle's Jordan Price is averaging 27.5PPG through 3 games this year.

Rhode Island is playing TCU right now on CBS Sports Network(they lead 17-15 midway through the 1st half) in the first game of the Cancun Challenge. If they win they'll face Maryland(or possibly Illinois State) in the championship game tomorrow.

For those of you who get the SEC Network, you may want to check out the other game of the Barclay's Classic as Army plays at Tennessee tonight at 7.

By: colonials37 (251 posts) - 11/24/2015 7:33:26 PM

It's a close game going on, Army leading 26-22 in the 1H.  I'm beginning to think after having trounced the other GW, and easily, Lafayette and Army werent bad teams at all that we beat.

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 11/24/2015 7:47:55 PM

Also on the Big 10 Network Radford leads at Penn State 77-68 with about 3 minutes left

By: Maine Colonial (487 posts) - 11/24/2015 7:49:53 PM

Army is only down 40-36 at the half. The Dark Knights are making Tennessee work hard. Hopefully they tire the Vols out for us but I don't think we want them to actually  pull out the win.

URI takes down TCU to earn the right to play the winner of Mayland and Illinois State

By: Thomas (1,146 posts) - 11/24/2015 9:55:38 PM

Maryland is struggling against Illinois State, they only lead 31-30 at halftime. Rhode Island didn't look very good in their win against TCU at all, but with the way Maryland has looked average in most of their games this year, Rhode Island(with it's rugged, hard-nosed style of play) has a shot to knock Maryland off tomorrow, if Maryland can survive this game against Illinois State.

By: colonials37 (251 posts) - 11/24/2015 9:56:00 PM

Looks like it's going to be a clean sweep for the A10 today.  4-0 so far, and 2 teams playing now but very likely to get the win.  That would be 6-0 for the day.

By: colonials37 (251 posts) - 11/24/2015 9:58:32 PM

Make that 5-0 now, with only fordham vs colgate left, leading 59-47 with 10mins left.

By: BM (5,673 posts) - 11/24/2015 10:04:31 PM

That's 80% winning percentage to date, and 10-5 versus the Power 7 conferences.  Still early, but I think we can end up at ~70% winning percentage if we go 65% the rest of the way.

By: Maine Colonial (487 posts) - 11/24/2015 10:22:27 PM

UMass gets a chance to take out Creighton tomorrow night. Then Richmond and Dayton go up against West Virginia and Iowa respectively Thursday night before GW faces Tennessee Friday night.

Radford beats Penn State at Penn State. I know PSU travels well, but they're now 2-2 with loses to Radford and Duquesne by 12 and 26 respectively. This is starting to feel like a must-win OOC game.
