VCU signs Oral Roberts' Korey Billbury

Georgia Tech signs Virginia Tech's Adam Smith

By: Me (138 posts) - 4/23/2015 4:51:58 PM

Interesting that Smith transferred in conference... they say he can play immediately but I thought if you transferred in conference you had to sit out

By: Me (138 posts) - 4/23/2015 4:52:50 PM

Sorry for all these comments haha, but Villanova also signed Paschall

Having to sit that extra year is an A-10 rule, not an NCAA rule.

Adam Smith, the invisible hand.  That was the confusion I raised last week with the Derrick Gordon UMASS immediately eligible transer, I thought the immediately eligible guys can transfer and play immediately regardless of conference.  Is that the case with Adam Smith within the ACC?

Billbury is immediately eligible and a steal for VCU.  Suspended from team by Oral Roberts, had excellent stats there, tremendous rebounder for a 6'3 guard and can shoot 3's.  Looks like an excellent transfer, who might have some issues, what was the suspension for?

OMG....Billbury is a beast!!  We don't have an answer for him.

VCU just sewed up the A10.

I detect a hint of sarcasm?

By: Buff (24 posts) - 4/23/2015 6:18:29 PM

By no means being sarcastic, he is a VERY VERY good player, definitely A10 POY star power  Pato is going to have a tought day at the office trying to guard him.   Just when we're all still celebrating the departure of Shaka, Coach Wade had to drop this Dynamo on us.  Shucks!!

At ORU, probably got caught out after the 8pm curfew.

By: THE DUDE (529 posts) - 4/23/2015 6:36:30 PM

Interesting, I agree the guy is very good, its a big transfer.  "Sewed up the A10" and the general tone of your post suggested sarcasm.

One note, Oral Roberts played better after his departure.

By: Buff (24 posts) - 4/23/2015 6:42:32 PM

OK I agree "sewed up" is a bit strong.  We will just leave it at "preseason favorite".  ML has been known to pull a big rabbit out of his hat (e,g Creek).  So maybe ML will say "Hey, not so fast".  The suspense is killing me.

VCU isn't going to be preseason anything.  They just lost arguably the two best players in the league to graduation, a world class coach to Texas greed and all their other recruits.

Damn that's a great post Pops, lets hope 100% of it holds true.

Dayton will be an issue next year.

VCU should be close to or at the top of the league. Let's be honest.

If Terry Larrier makes the sophomore jump with guys like Melvin Johnson, Mo Alie-Cox and now this Billbury kid... they'll be in the A-10 favorite conversation.

Their recruits weren't going to be make or break this year anyway, what they have on that team is really good. There are a lot of good A-10 teams out there though. No one knows if Will Wade can coach those kids up though. Maybe he won't.

By: THE DUDE (529 posts) - 4/23/2015 11:19:34 PM

Melvin Johnson is an excellent player, Mo an important cog, Billbury is very good.  Jequan Lewis, I hate to agree but I do, VCU figures to be very good next year.  They have more transfers potentially too, including Tyler Harris from Providence.

How these pieces fit together and how the team responds to the new Coach, remains to be seen.

Lewis, Brooks, Larrier, Johnson, Tillman, Burgess,  Ali Cox, now this new guy.    I hate VCU as much as the next guy, but my hopes of taking them down this year is quickly diminishing.

Respond to New coach?  They got a Shaka clone.

A few days ago Fordham's Eric Paschall announced he was transferring to Villanova. It will be interesting to see if he can be the same type of scorer at Villanova that he was at Fordham last year. He'll sit out the upcoming season, and have 3 years of eligibility staring in 2016-2017

VCU dodged a bullet because it looked like they were going to have some major defections. I believe they actually put out a press release saying that Justin Tillman was going to transfer. His transferring led to speculation that Gilmore and Larrier were going to transfer too. VCU was on the verge of becoming a middle-of-the-pack to turrible A-10 team, but convincing all the returning players to stay, and adding Korey Billbury makes them one of the best teams in the A-10 next year. I just saw that Billbury averaged about 14PPG/7REBS and shot 35% on 3-pointers last year at Oral Roberts, based on those numbers, he should be a huge addition for them next year as The Dude and Buff pointed out. Also, I never realized that Olie-Cox was just a sophomore(redshirt one) last year, I thought he was a JR. He played in an end-of-the-year, local All-Star game(not the 2012 Capital Classic) with Savage and McDonald in high school, so I figured he was a JR and I'd been watching him for the past 3 years.

i actually don't hate vcu and normally they terrify me but i don't think you can downplay the loss of their coach.  they also need a point guard.  and as great as billbury sounds i dont think he's a point guard if his team played better after he left.  or maybe he was.

one of those recruits was a 4 star.

The simple loss of Weber made them looked very mortal. Removing Graham is an even bigger loss. They still have a ton of talent and depth, but they had that last year even without Weber and they were noticeably different.

Nothing wrong with Jequan Lewis at point guard. If memory serves, they won the A-10 tourney there.

They also had a highly rated recruit, Johnny Williams, as a freshman backup last year. He wasn't an impact player most of the year, but he looked fantastic against us and basically had a career game that day (to that point).  I think they'll be fine, despite the lost recruiting class.  Plus, as we know, the transfer season is far from over so still too early to assess team's rosters for next year.

By: pops (505 posts) - 4/24/2015 2:01:48 PM

Both Lewis and the freshman point guard whose name escapes me, really struggled running the offense.  They won the tournament because Allie Cox became a monster down the stretch and discovered how to score and johnson rediscovered his shot for a couple of games to give graham some support.  But Lewis struggled after webber went down.  he was much better early in the year and as a freshman.

We'll see.  I'm certainly not ready to hand them the conference.

Can we get any of the VCU guys with the last scholarship?

By: Long Suffering Fan (4,106 posts) - 4/24/2015 5:08:14 PM

As I undersand it, a VCU kid who decommits will have to sit a year before he can go to another A-10 team.  That is what happened after Trey Davis decommitted from GW after the Hobbs firing.   He signed with UMass but was not eligible his first year.

Continuing the VCU theme-

Andrew Force@AForceF150 Apr 22

2015 SF Gerron Scissum (AL) verbally commits to VCU. Other options included Murray State, Troy, Wofford, Florida Atlantic, and more....

It will be interesting to see the VCU board's reaction to the below links...

VCU's Terry Larrier to UCONN.  Larrier was the 43rd ranked player in the nation a year ago, huge upside guy despite somewhat uneven Frosh year for VCU.  Big loss for VCU, big gain for UCONN.  Nice transfer offseason for Ollie who really needed to boost his roster after some subpar recruiting:

Gibbs, Shonn Miller, Larrier.
