Just lost to Canisius.  Canisus benefits from a new coach with a brain for the first time in a long while (Jim Baron), but they are terrible, and picked to finish either 9th or 10th (last) in the MAAC.

So, we don't beat BU, then it will make for an interesting discussion, and possibly a sign of a very long year.

Don't get too cocky about us beating BU on the road. Regardless of the loss to Canisius, BU is picked by Lindy's to win the America East conference.

Giving ML's experience in the America East and his familiarity with BU and BU's roster.  I would be kind of suprised if the team doesn't come out fired up and will pull out the W.

Anything other than a W will be extremely dissapointing.

based on the other thread and the blueribbon write-up which i thought was very good, this is not the team that beat us last year.  sounds like they have a point guard, limited size underneath and a talented incoming class.

This is not meant to sound cocky at all, but this is simply a game that GW must have.  BU is young, not nearly as athletic, and lost Jake O'Brien, their best player who transferred to Temple.  This is one of those "if we lose, we beat ourselves" type of matchups.  Play smart and under control and GW should be fine.  GW by 10.

Great game for McDonald.  Much more aggressive going to the hole and using his strength vs BU.  36 minutes played...not sure if he'll be able to keep that pace up for the season.  Savage only a brief appearance (1 min).  As Savage clears himself from concussion symptoms it would be good to get 15 min or so from the other freshman.

Bynes with a strong bounce back game getting 9 points and shooting well.  Mikic hit some open 3s to spread the defense and beat BU's zone.  Kromah was active on defense and also aggressive offensively going to the basket in the 2nd half.  Larsen really understands the game well for a freshman bigman, passing nicely out of the double teams.  Gardino won't be a big score this year but does a lot of things well.

Oh yea, Armwood had an OK game as well.

20 minutes of great offense followed by 5 of good defense followed by 10 terrible minutes concluding with a final 5 minutes in which they re-asserted their dominance and knocked down every free throw.  some additional observations;

  • great game from joe mac
  • key bounceback from bryan
  • armwood was a monster on defense and the glass, is much more capable of scoring and creating plays out of the post than edwards but tries to do too much
  • mikic hit a catch and shoot turnaround jumper from 15  but missed a wide open 10 footer by 3 feet.  but a much better game from him, overall.
  • kromah finally played some meaningful positive minutes down the stretch.  maybe this will get him over the hump
  • joe mac, patricio, larsen can all shoot free throws!
  • in his 2 minutes paris loooked good
  • kopriva's line:  6 minutes, 0 points, 0 rebounds, 4 fouls.  again, this was the type of team he should do well against.
  • can not wait for pellom to join this group!!!!!

A very well coached game by ML.  2 plays I will point to in particular.  One was the very first play of the game, which was having McDonald post up his defender and score an easy basket.  After a shakey first game, kid got some early confidence and went off and had a great game, as good as nearly any game by his predecessor (nothing against Tony).   My only complaint  against McDonald, Mentz, was he seems to be turover prone and had problem with the pressure.  On the other hand, this was only his second college game, and that will change.  Hope he is A10 frosh of the week with his stats.  I am very excited.  The other play in particular was fairly late in the game when we had a comfortable but not  yet safe lead, and we spread the court, took a little time of the clock, and had a beautiful pass by Garino (I believe) to a cutting Armwood for the dunk.  That was clearly a drawn up play that was worked to perfection.  Couple of other intersting tidbits from the game.  Kethan came in, on his first offensive possession he turned the ball over on a charge, was pulled, and never returned.  Also Larsen started.  (Hope everyone caught his assist.  As previously mentioned, from what I saw in the Kenner, he is an excellent passer from the low post).  It also appears that Lasan and Smith are going to be more role players than stars.  Interesting also that both Larsen and Mikic started, while 2 starters from first game, Lasan and Kopriva, sat.  Poor Lasan really does seem somewhat lost in our offense.  Thought he played good hard defense today, though.  As for Smith, I just don't get it.

It is a little difficult to tell, because it seems like so much is dependent on the level of the competition.  BU looked like a team heading into the Patriot League.  They will do fine there, but GW had a huge talent and athletic advantage over BU.  Armwood swatted everything away that came in his direction.  McDonald carved through their defense and broke it down.  Was YSU so much better that it was able to shut these guys down?  It's hard to tell.

But I did at least come away from watching today's game thinking GW might actually be a good team next year.  Armwood and Kromah will be seniors, and Garino, McDonald and Larsen will have a year of basketball under their belt.  Those 5 players alone could be enough to be a top tier A10 team. McDonald does have a lot of upside.  He showed that today.  Garino is solid and can play on both ends of the floor.  Larsen could be a strong low post player if he can finish.  He established good position on offense today, but he needs to finish.  Lonergan also needs to improve on the bench.  He has strange subbing patterns.  Some guys get left in for too long, while others get pulled too quickly.

The bottom line is there is a team in there somewhere that can probably be competitive in the A10.  That may have to wait until next season, or maybe not.  If Pellom can come back 100% and the Freshmen can mature quickly, there could be a surprise or two this season.  Still, a lot has to come together.  Finally, Bryan Bynes may be the most inconsistent player on the team, but when he's good, GW wins.

JoeMac had a very good game. the best of his career as they noted. one thing that concerns me is BU outrebounded us 17-6 on the offensive boards. one mitigating factor is we shot much better and had fewer opportunities but 17 is a big number for a very undersized  team.

11/17/2012 5:28:16 PM
Poster: The MV

The keys and thoughts:

1) BU starting guards shoot 5-25 from the floor.  Tremendous defense by JMac and BB.  Only Papale did any damage.

2) JMac asserted himself.  The defense was willing to give him some looks and he drilled them.  Then, he got to the line by pump faking and penetrating.  LSF, the "turnover machine" as you refer to him had 3 in 36 minutes (along with 3 assists).  I'll take that any day if I get 21 points along with it.

3) Mr. Armwood is a beast.  I truly hope to see this against better competition.  But for today, what a defensive performance.

4) Lasan had some big second half buckets by figuring out that if runs the floor on breaks, he can get some ridiculously easy baskets.

5) 20-22 at the line.  Only Dwayne Smith missed.

6) Bryan Bynes.  I was very rough on you after last Saturday's game.  Not only do your numbers look far better today, but your decisions on the court were substantially better too.

The criticisms:

1) Coach Lonergan..I know those halftime interviews are fluffy bullshit but you really don't have to tell the listening audience that you'll be changing up defenses and using a 1-3-1 in the second half.  I do believe that was the first time I've ever seen a coach reveal any part of his gameplan at halftime.

2) GW had WAY too many problems with BU's pressure defense.  We will usually have 3 guys on the court at any one time who can handle the ball in the backcourt against heavy pressure.  Not sure that Isiah ought to be one of those guys.  The hope is that JMac was tired and Keithan wasn't ready to go all out.

The takeaway:

GW shot just over 52% from the floor.  The opponent had much to do with this but so did GW's shot selection.  GW had assists on 16 out of 24 baskets.  The team took just 9 three point attempts.  They scored a ton in the paint and a ton in transition.  Rather than allow the shot clock to consistently wind down only to take a tough shot, GW made things look very easy today.  Good shot selection, working as a team, and solid decision-making will be they keys to this season.

May have overstated Joe Macs turnovers during the game, but on his post game interview, he even admitted struggling against the press.  He also had some bad passes that did not amount to a turnover.  Please note that I am not critical of Joe.  I thought he had a wonderful game and am very excited about having a frost PG who can have the game he had today.  Joe also corroborated my observation about the coaching, and that ML told them pregame that our guards had size advantage and they can be exploited, and that they called his number the first play of the game and hitting it gave him confidence the rest of the game.  (If you haven't already done so, you should listen to the post game interviews of ML (who really tells it like it is) and Joe.

As they say, this is what depth looks like. I am comfortable in saying that Garino and Savage will continue to come around... Joe won't hit 20 all the time, but there is now plenty of help. I am guessing that Armood is going to be in the shotblocking leader board after that one. I will also point out that a team without a winning tradition will have trouble getting used to playing with a lead. Pellom is certainly needed to add to the rebounding. Their depth will start to pay dividends later in the season. I am also glad that Bynes stepped it up... along with Kromah and Smith, for their minutes to produce some points when we needed them.

What we have is potential for real improvement.
