Temple to BE?

Looks like the BE will ask Temple to become a full member. Story here. Anyone know any of the details?

Uggh - I have to imagine they would take that offer.  I think the A-10 is going to take a hit in all of this.  GW may have to rely more and more on a great OOC schedule in the future.  You see mid-major schools like Gonzaga and Butler becoming national names in non-power conferences.  The A-10 may be moving in that direction, so if Nero wants to build a basketball program that goes somewhere he may have to think beyond the A-10.  It would be nice if X stayed and the A-10 picked up Butler, but who knows.

So what are the prognosticators saying about how this move will impact the A10?

The BE has enough basketball teams so I don't see the appeal of adding X.

They are a perennially strong team with a credible arena. Same with Dayton. Both provide additional midwest presence to go along with those schools already in the BE. I can see plenty of appeal.

Yuh oh. I wonder if this means the Big East is going to try to focus on football??

Poog, I'm pretty sure DB's point is that if Temple is their priority then that means that they are trying to keep BE football alive, thus, neither X nor Dayton is of any use to them. Of course it should be noted that the entire premise of this thread is flawed--that article doesn't say that the Big East is inviting Temple, it says that they're voting on whether to invite Temple.

irony here in that Temple's football teamwas one reason they left Big East few years back and now the football team is playing well.

Don't they have a "memorandum of understanding" with the MAC?

Temple did not willingly leave the BE, it was kicked out!  So it is kind of pathetic that they would run back.

NJC, I've yet to meet a human being that wouldn't be a whore for a John with enough dollar bills in his hand.

Especially true for BCS level college athletics these days.

Is it me or is it true that Philly isn't a college football town. I have only seen a crowd at one Philly college football game. The rest are like large bowls of empty seats.

You're right, Temple only had a big crowd at the Linc a few weeks ago because it was the Penn State game.  And Franklin Field is largely empty for Penn home games.

NJ, the reason that I mention this is that I am thinking that a program that can't draw a stick figure crowd may easily find itself under economic pressure in the next few years as budgets come under attack. I can't see that the TV deal with the Big East would be that much better than the MAC.

the two Navy games in Philadelphia (JFK field) I attended in the late 70's were very packed

notta, those were the games. Army Navy were good no great, but I have seen a lot of empty seats for everything else.

My casual observation is that college campuses in or close to urban areas have to win to keep the stands filled in football.  The best local example is College Park where the Terps even exapanded to make more room for the crowds.  Temple has had so little on field moments in the past 20 years.  If I lived in Philadelphia and was an alum of Temple, I am quite sure I know where I would have attending Temple Owl football games on my Saturday "to do" list!
