We don't a chance a chance in hell at this guy, but its pretty awesome we made his list. Good to see our Montrose inroads getting us somewhere. I think he might have gone to some GW games and stuff with Larsen. Anyone know if that's true?

Poog5/3/2012 11:33:48 AM
Kevin Larsen made a point about early and constant love from GW. Never gonna raise school's basketball profile unless we go after the better players and maybe steal a few away from the so-called big-time schools. Identify the kids that fit your needs and criteria and go after them. Let the kids decide if Lonergan and GW is the right place for them. Also probably can't hurt in getting slightly lower rated players if we're seen as seriously going after even better ones. Successful or not, this coaching staff is consistently getting the GW brand and presence out there among potential recruits.
Bigfan5/4/2012 4:20:26 AM
And getting them to the Smith Center games repeatedly, to give them an early GW tie that non-local schools can't match..

Bacon Egg & Cheese5/5/2012 11:41:44 PM
Cool. If this kid is as good as the schools that are recruiting him, it sounds like it would be a steal. I'm not sure what Lonergan is saying, but it would be great if we can get better players to come to GW and build up a high profile program.
Dolphin Michael5/6/2012 1:28:46 PM
Seeing that we have only seen him play as an underclassman, it is clear that he has significant upside. As Lonergan would say, is a boxscore stuffer. Smooth and some scoring potential (now) on his own. An early commit would be huge news. Lots of love for the guy coming in September of 2014.

Nice find, BM. You are a truly gifted cyber-stalker!
In all seriousness, this is a good reminder that as happy we are about the current recruiting class, the staff is still somewhat hamstrung by the fact that they've still been on the job just around a year. The key to beating out mid to upper BCS programs is to establish relationships from the time these kids are sophmores, maybe even freshmen. That won't really be possible until the class of 2014 (even next year's class were already rising juniors when our staff started recruiting).
Maybe at the end it doesn't matter, but once in a while there is going to be a kid who does remember who believed in him first, and who sees why GW is a great place to go to college and play basketball.

Apparently "stood out" at the Jordan Brand tournament (a showcase for 16 and Under international players (despite the off-shooting numbers, he was one of just 4 players they wrote up as stand outs).
Kevin Zabo (Canada, PG, 6’2”, Montrose Christian)
4-17 FG, 3 reb, 2 assist, 4 stl, 3 TO, 12 TP
Displayed excellent on-ball defense throughout the game-pressured his man from baseline to baseline and was in the opponent’s shirt. At his best in transition- quick with the ball in the open court. Displayed a nice step-back jumper in the games opening minutes. Solid ball handler with either hand- can break man down off dribble to get to the rim and create his own shot. Needs to improve his court vision- more of a scorer and combo guard then true PG at least that is what he displayed in this game. Gets out of control and is somewhat TO prone. Definitely a guard to keep your eye on especially since he plays HS ball in the states.

In recent years, there's been a boost of outstanding Canadian players(including his brother Kris Joseph) coming to play high school ball in the D.C.area, I'm assuming M.Joseph is connected with the person(s) responsible for getting those guys to D.C.area schools and will use it to his advantage when it comes to recruiting them to GW.

if he is not serious about his education then we cannot compete with San Diego for a 19 year old Canadian. Oh, I also think the school has a library.

He has a natural basketball body with speed, quickness, and a strong frame and the feel for the game to vary his speeds and make good decisions.

Hofstra, Utah Valley, George Washington, Rice, Northeastern, James Madison & Boston U are involved with San Diego State transfer Kevin Zabo.
thinker6/23/2015 12:16:42 AM
I have to say that this is interesting.
Zabo was highly recruited by TOP programs out of HS. I think back in the early days of his recruitment ESPN had him as a 4 star kind of guy in the 90's. Now ESPN has him as a 3 star guy with a 74.
His freshman year at San Diego State was likely a real disappointment to everyone involved. So he's recalibrating like lots of kids do. The teams listed above as being in the mix are GW and other schools well below A-10 level.
I would just wonder what kind of player he is at this point. I certainly think that ML has seen him play in HS a ton of times since he was recruiting a bunch of guys at Montrose so he certainly has a better notion than I do so it;s a situation where if ML really wants him so do I. But one wonders why there aren't any other higher mid-majors in the mix.
Maybe he's fallen so far off the radar that he could be a total steal for GW. And I'd think we have a good shot since he lived in DC before, has a friend on the team, a fellow Canadian as a coach, a familiarity with ML, and come to games a number of times at the Smith Center.
That would make for a pretty good guard rotation in 2016 - Sina, Paul, Zabo, and Roland.

Doesn't wow one with his college experience. Sometimes, as we painfully learn, being a prospect is different from when you throw the ball up in D-1 competition.
Stats from when he was playing 13 minutes a game don't really wow. We have a board member who has gone to SD State games and didn't see anything. Agree with Thinker in at least wondering why no higher schools interested.
And wondering why he sat, not playing at all after he was recovered from the foot injury. Don't think I would trust Steve Fisher to tell us the truth or with the keys to one's car.
That said, sometimes people develop, a la Zeke. Maybe he just needs a fresh start. Certainly seems to be solid physically from the picture. And apparently had the skills at one point.
Think we could get a dynamic freshman or more accomplished transfer for that slot with a lot of playing time open, but don't have the experience or insights of ML.
Buff and Blue Bandit6/23/2015 12:27:18 PM
While I trust Coach Lonergan in the transfer market (Zeek, Creek, and even Kopriva), I am immediately skeptical of this move because it means that if we landed Kevin we would lose our last open spot for this season. Maybe there is nothing out there for next years squad but unless Kevin is a major upgrade over our current stable of PGs and PG recruits, I don't see a reason to make the move immediately.
The MV6/23/2015 12:40:34 PM
The underwheming college stats are a non-factor in my mind. The two years that Kevin has been with the program have resulted in 58 Aztec wins and two NCAA tournament losses to #1 seeds (including national champion Duke this past season). SD State has become an elite program under Steve Fisher (the country's most underrated coach) and it's quite possible that Kevin isn't an elite player. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be more than good enough to help lead and be aproductive player for GW.
If I were ML, I would work him out and make sure you still like what you see before offering (assuming Kevin is interested in GW).
BM6/23/2015 12:48:19 PM
According to this, he's already 20 years old. He won't play at his new school until he's 21 and will be there for three years. A year at a top prep school, a year at SDSU, a year of seasoning with GW and then three years of production by a mature lead guard. Looks like a solid bet as long as ML wants him here. In that case, the only downside is that he could scare away any top 2006 PGs.
Bigfan6/23/2015 12:59:03 PM
Trust BM's insights as well.
For a PG prospect, would rather have Darnell, who is a big X factor as well, but may have a great upside and draw attention to the program (see Rogers, Shawnta).
If we are able to get Darnell here.
Long Suffering Fan6/23/2015 1:19:34 PM
Put me in the underwhelmed camp also. Based upon past and projected playing time at SDSU, he appears to have been "shown the door" as the reason for the transfer...aside from the fact that he is not being recruited by any bigger programs. Do we really want that type of player? On the flip side, he was only a frosh, and there must be something the coaching staff likes about him.
NewGWFan6/23/2015 1:50:10 PM
He was originally perused by UCLA, UConn, GTown, West Virginia, Arizona, GW and Virginia. Pretty good company. I think kicking the tires is well worth the time.
Pops6/23/2015 1:50:50 PM
Agree with LSF, it sounds like he was cut. Especially since they have a 4 star recruit coming in
The Dude6/23/2015 2:28:37 PM
Less mystery here than it might seem. Zabo was a top 10 ranked PG starting as a Soph for the #1 HS team in country (KevLar's Montrose), with every blue blood knocking on the the door. His stock fell some as JR/SR because of range shooting issues, stock and PT continued to fall at SDSU as Frosh, lost time to NBA lottery pick talents in the backcourt.
Does everything well as I noted above, size, penetrates, good athlete, physical, guards well, at some point you need to recruit some guys like that no? Someone needs to be able to guard, someone needs to be able to match up physically with elite athletes? Unless we're trying to be Davidson 2.0?
The MV6/23/2015 3:17:22 PM
Were any of you excited about landing Maurice Creek? For all intents and purposes, he was "cut" from Indiana (not technically cut, nor was Kevin, but was told that minutes would be few and far between). "One person's trash..." as the saying goes.
thinker6/23/2015 3:52:36 PM
I agree with MV that the stats at SDSU needn't be damning. Again though why is GW by far the highest level school in the mix? And he started out highly rated by ESPN and such but didn't end up that way.

Just remember that with ML's generally strong reputation as having an eye for talent, we have become the type of schools that players/coaches/handlers will leak as interested in a player so that when a list shows up like GW, BU. Towson, then GW's presence might pique the interest of a school more on our level than BU or Towson's. Or we could really be interested when you see a list like that.
Despite the proliferation of infomration on the internet, this has been another episode of the hit show, "We really don't know anything"
Bo Knows6/24/2015 10:42:09 AM
Shocking!!!!! A report on the internet about GW recruiting targets again turns out to be untrue. Details at 11.
The Dude6/24/2015 2:31:55 PM
That's all it takes? One anonymous poster?
To be precise, "people" are not "posting here that ML is interested" BM is posted reporting that states GW is, people discusssed the player, and one anonymous poster wrote that it isn't true.
Bo Knows6/24/2015 2:45:23 PM
How about I confirm what GWStag wrote - that now makes two. Feel better?
thinker6/24/2015 3:24:20 PM
The tweet that BM posted was by Alex Kline who is considered reputable and generally reliable. That's why I took it seriously. Stag and Bo stating ML isn't interested trumps that. And Alex Kline or whoever else is tweeting what schools are interested in what players is getting that information strictly from the player's side. The schools are never themselves going to comment on who they're interested in because generally they're not allowed under NCAA rules and also because it's not smart. And how could one coach know what other schools are interested in which player anyway. So it almost always comes from the player side.
And as FQ logically points out the player would have lots of different incentives to overstate who's interested in him.
And we're all pretty much anonymous here as virtually every person on every message board is. So I'm not really sure what that has to do with anything. I would be happy to have a long running bickering thread about it if everybody thought that was a good idea.
thinker6/24/2015 3:28:37 PM
To me better to speculate about whether we'd have any interest or possibility with Chris Obekpa who has just announced he's leaving St. Johns.
Mike K6/24/2015 4:03:12 PM
GW STAG has been accurate in the past....Thanks for the info Stag.
Bo Knows6/24/2015 4:10:56 PM
Unlike Sulaimon, GW was in fact interested in Zabo at one time (not recently but when he was in high school). It would be natural to believe GW is interested now that he is a transfer and GW has a scholarship. But needs have changed since the initial interest and perhaps the evaluation of his fit as well. So while Kline may report it and it seems like a reasonable thing, again we are reminded that the internet is not the source of all knowledge.
The Dude6/24/2015 4:31:25 PM
Haha you're aware you are writing this on the internet (and anonymously)? If Adam Shefter says something on TV (or whispers in your ear) you'd be more inclined to believe that which he writes on the internet?
Its possible that Kline and others are wrong, just as its possible that people can write unsourced things here that are not always accurate. No one who reads the things BM posts believe they are 100% accurate, including BM and everyone here who values them.
Similarly, even if we believe there's someone here with great insider access (is there some reason to believe that's the case?) that doesn't mean they are always being told every single thing that's going on. I really don't even know why even a buddy of ML would be told by ML everything, why would he?
Bo Knows6/24/2015 4:42:25 PM
Dude, you have fallen into the trap that if it is printed it must be correct. Question: did you ever notice the daily corrections in the Washington Post?
The difference here is that GW is not allowed to "publically" correct the record when it comes to recruiting. So bad information goes unchallenged solely because no one can officially correct the record. Therefore, sometimes surrogates must do so anonymously of course.
Also, does GW really care if someone says they are being recruited? At the end of the day it is offers not interest that matters and only GW controls those.
Bo Knows6/24/2015 5:05:31 PM
thinker6/24/2015 5:29:10 PM
Always the nuance gets lost on Dude. If you understood how the internet and twitter works then you would understand what Alex Kline was actually saying.
Here is what he's NOT saying: GW is in the mix for Zabo. It seems like he's saying that but he really isn't. For him to really say that, GW sources of some sort would have to confirm it - which they didn't and wouldn't.
Actually what Kline is reporting is that some unnamed source connected to Zabo said GW was in the mix. You just don't get into all of that in 144 characters in twitter. If this was a real news story you would have to source the information somehow for context -- But here the information could ONLY come from the Zabo side - OBVIOUSLY because who else could it come from?
So do I believe that someone connected to Zabo told Alex Kline that GW was in the mix? Absolutely. Do I believe that GW is in the mix? Absolutely not.
And believing BM has nothing to do with anything. He's posting what someone else has reported. I don't think BM's is making up fake tweets and presenting them to us.
And Dude save your energy on this thread, I'm getting ready to start a new Sulaimon thread just for you.
The Dude6/24/2015 6:42:15 PM
The points/questions I posed are nuanced, you instead are arguing your invented points, we've been down this road, the board is a better place when you don't do that to everything I write.
My actual points and questions posed above remain, and trust me, like everything I write they were aimed at the board at large, not 1 poster.
BM will continue to post these recruit reports and many here will find value in reading them, well aware that they are not always 100% accurate, and with an understanding of why that is. I sure do.

Thread from SDSU forum:
Based on what I read, most of the posters thought Zabo had the potential to contribute. I guess GW isn't involved (according to the previous posters), but it could be more of a position issue than a talent issue. Then again, I haven't watched the kid play at all so I can't really pretend to know that much about his talent level.

Bunny (do you like that better than Princess?),
There you go talking about what's best for the board again. The best thing for the board is for you and your fabulous nuanced reasoning to join me in my new Rapelaimon thread. That's a place you can bedazzle us all with your wit, legal wisdom, broad understanding of new age media. And all away from the eyes of those who don't want to see bickering.
We can discuss anything you like.

This "resume" from the Aztec thread linked by CT Colonial. Pretty impressive. Not exactly sure why he dropped off the map when conference season started for them, but he certainly has proven himself against tough competition.
He'd be a GREAT get for any of the other schools on the list.

So, when a player of this high caliber very recent pedigree ends up at a Juco, what's the conclusion? Off court issues?

Nah, my guess is he needs to re-stoke the interest flame... He presumably went with the cosmetic school choice the first time around (didn't pan out) and came up with some very ugly options this time around.
