The last year in America has been filled with the most caustic rhetoric that I can recall in my lifetime. Virtually all of the political norms were bulldozed over and the America that I have seen in the last months is not one that I recognize. As a former political insider I wake up each day with trepidation wondering what transpired overnight or what will transpire during that day. I don’t ever recall feeling that way. I guess we all get to share in the blame for what things have become.
At the same time, many of those trends visible in our larger society have played out, in a fashion, here on this board as well. Obviously I’ve been a part of making that happen here. When I look at what is transpiring in the country I have to ask – If we can’t make it work on this little niche message board, what chance do we have as a nation?
When I look at my own words, I see that I drifted further and further from what I would like to believe are my own core values. I believe that in certain circumstances I broke my own internal rules of fair and appropriate play, and I want to be better than that. In many circumstances, particularly in my back and forth with Dude I was:
Unduly personal,Unduly argumentative,Unduly negative, andAbout unduly trivial things
So if I want this board to be better, then I have to be the change I want to see. So I apologize to Dude, Herve, and the board as a whole for my part in the breakdown of comity and civility here. I will endeavor to do better. I hope to look at those 4 factors above before posting in the future.
Don’t take this to mean that I regret everything or even many things that I’ve posted because a lot of things that have ruffled or offended, I feel did meet my standard. I don’t regret the tone or content of many of my posts from this past summer with regard to the ML situation, for example. Arguing vociferously about the validity of ESPN’s star ranking system, for example, the way I did? That kind of stuff I do regret.
So, I for one, always try to continue to learn and evolve and this is where I’m at. Everyone is, of course, free to join me on this path to civility and hopefully making GWHoops great again.
