Thank you, BM.  I should have read this before posting on Toro's thread.

SHOFAZ+111/20/2015 7:36:56 PM

Is Smith this much of a beast and is underrated because the competition is not that good or what?

And thank you very much BM

BM11/20/2015 8:53:36 PM

No idea on Smith.  We'll see over the season I guess.  Here are some hightlights from their first game (won 63-42).  Don't know how many he scored, but they have video of him making eight baskets.

Colonial'1311/20/2015 9:28:17 PM

Haha awesome to see some clips of Collin. Didn't look like a whole lot of defense being played by the big man lol

CH11/20/2015 9:47:19 PM

No defense!  It looked like an all-star game.  All dunks, crazy passes and wide open 3s.

Collin looks like an athlete though.

Bo Knows11/20/2015 11:02:03 PM

Collin's offensive game is ahead of his defense but he can play defense much better than he showed in those clips.

BM11/21/2015 8:48:13 AM

Looks like they've kept opponents to under 40 points a game so someone is playing defense.

Would love to know more about the level of competition because Smith is lighting it up. I've heard the coaches are very excited about him, and think he's way better than people realize (which presumably means people on this board, or who otherwise express opinions to them - just my guess).

Very curious whether this a senior year offensive blowup, or a Jonathan Davis schedule, or something in between

The Dude11/25/2015 12:59:20 AM

In between would be my educated guess.  Level of competition isn't great, but he does seem to be more dominating this year.  Granted, I'm not an expert on coastal Florida HS basketball scene.

CPots11/25/2015 6:27:28 AM

Definitely not Jonathan Davis competition.

Found this while looking to see how Darnell was doing.. Will try and find more

The Shiloh boys were touted as one of the top threats to defending Class AAAAAA state champion Wheeler this basketball season in part because of the addition of two guards from out of state who were headed to NCA Division I programs.

Now neither is with the Generals.

Khalil Richard, committed to Siena, left before the start of the season. George Washington 5-foot-3 recruit Darnell Rogers left this month.

BM12/11/2015 2:16:56 PM

Good catch Florida.  Looks like he's still all-in on GW from his Tweets.

BTW, I would assume at least one of the coaches will be at Slam Dunk to the Beach at Lewes, DE this year.  GW 2017 recruits including Garza and Moultrie. Jair Bolden and Arnaldo Toro will be there too and their teams will play a GW Special on December 28.

HankKnox12/11/2015 5:21:54 PM

Anyone know why Darnell left Shiloh? What's the deal?

ChuckStram12/11/2015 5:35:50 PM

Not a clue.

Thomas12/11/2015 5:47:11 PM

Jair Bolden is in the area to play in the 8-team Bullis Holiday Classic at Bullis High School which started this afternoon. His team(Westtown) defeated Takoma Academy, 78-60 in the first game earlier today. I believe they will play tomorrow at 6:30 in the semifinal

RKelley12/11/2015 5:50:07 PM

I really like Marfo and Smith. Marfo moves so smoothly for a big man, and he has great hands. I can see him being a rebounding machine, and and excellent post defender. Collin Smith has a lot of upside. He reminds me a little bit of Armwood.

I really don't know what to expect from the class after Marfo. I suppose I'm not alone. The remaining prospects all have quirky profiles--some very quirky. I like that ML/GW is willing to take a gamble on unconventional talent. Bolden could be a mini Garino, or maybe he transfers after year-1. Toro could be a really good starting post player, or maybe he rides the pine like [insert giant, slow big man here]. Rogers--no idea at all.

Buff and Blue Bandit12/11/2015 6:32:30 PM

The Gwinnett Prep Sports Report called it "an addition by subtraction" and that there was too much talent up front. Is it possible he left due to lack of playing time?

CPots12/11/2015 7:28:29 PM

No they didn't... 'PREP BASKETBALL NOTES: Shiloh boys hope for addition by subtrac'... Key word... 'Hope'

The Dude12/11/2015 7:33:26 PM

Marfo is a block of Granite.  The old adage "every HS kid of course needs to get much stronger" ....not true.  Marfo could compete physically at this level tomorow.  I liked the rim attack, and 1-dunk and the fired up reaction.

The flip side of the adage is also not always true, "He's only 18 he'll get a lot stronger in time."  Even for those who do, when they arrive physically completely unready, that itself is an issue.  Like the majority of our recent recruiting, which has left us without any Frontcourt depth at all and a way too thin bench.

As for Toro, there's nothing slow about him. His fluid movement is probably his strength for a Big.  Marfo y Toro would be in our rotation if they arrived on campus yesterday.   When you watch Collin Smith and Toro highlights, consider the quality of their opponents, respectively.  Collin reminds me of Zeek about as much as Roland reminds me of Steph Curry.

Westtown vs St Ben's (Bolden vs Toro) tonight at 7:30.  Should be live streaming here.

BM12/29/2015 1:05:28 AM

Watched some of the game on replay.  Bolden ran the show for a loaded Westtown squad and was one of the leading scorers when it seemed like he hurt his left shoulder swiping at the ball in the second quarter.  He tried to go back in, hanging his left arm and playing with his right, but that didn't last too long.  He was on the bench with ice on his shoulder and in a sling for the second half.  Toro was a beast on the boards.  They have him leading the game with 10 boards, but I'm pretty sure they short-changed him.  His offensive game extended two feet from the basket, at least for this game.  His outside shots looked pretty ugly.

The Dude12/29/2015 1:51:20 AM

Watched much of the game, Toro looked good, his 3's were not falling, but the stroke looked ok, showed some versatility, drives, shots didn't go down but I was impressed.   As noted above, a board machine as always and his defense looked very strong.  Moves well, unselfish, helps on D, can guard the perimeter, looks noticeably stronger than last I saw him.  He's the kind of frame that could be a legit load in 3-4 years time, today looks like a man among very talented boys.

Honestly, if I didn't know Westown had a pair of Nationally Top 10 recruits, I might have guessed the biggest recruit in the game was Toro.

Bolden looked good, scored a bunch early, then blended in some on a loaded court of talent, and in a game where there was very little scoring. Alpha Male take charge PG, he's like the inverse of most of our Guards, quicker defensively than he is with the ball on offense.

Mo Bamba, you're gonna hear that name a lot in the years to come.

Big game for Marfo in blowout loss.

Worcester Academy made the trip up to Vermont Academy to play a NEPSAC Class AA contest on Sunday afternoon.  VA prevailed by a score of 101-60.

Vermont got off to a quick lead.  WA was able to pull within 7 points late in the first half, but Vermont proved to be too explosive and had too much firepower.

Senior big man and George Washington bound Kevin Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ) scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in defeat.  Post-graduate point guard Nassir Barrino (Newark, NJ) netted 19 points for the Hilltoppers, too.

Worcester Academy drops to 8-7 (6-5 in NEPSAC Class AA).  They will host St. Thomas More at 4pm on Wednesday at Rowe Court.

Great to hear that Jair is actually healthy and playing...developing his game further, should have a chance to make an immediate impact next season.

Hope the change in schools has not affected Darnell academically.

As sure his father is telling him, G W takes school seriously.

Which is great for him and other recruits.

Marfo goes for 27 points and 22 rebounds in two point home loss.

On Coaches vs. Cancer Day here at Worcester Academy and as a part of Winter Carnival Spirit Week, the boys basketball team hosted NEPSAC Class AA member Commonwealth Academy on Rowe Court.  In a close game, WA was defeated on a layup with 1 second to go, 68-66.

Commonwealth got off to a hot start on some productive early offense.  The WA defense locked up late though, and post-graduate point guard Nassir Barrino (Newark, NJ) lead the way with 10 points heading into the half.  George Washington-bound senior big man Kevin Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ) hauled in 13 rebounds in the first half.  Thanks to a buzzer-beater from deep, Commonwealth lead 36-28 at the half.

WA came storming back, cutting the deficit to 3 early.  While Worcester couldn't quite get over the hump, they stayed within single digits for most of the half.  Down 52-42, the Hilltoppers went on a 14-4 run halfway through the half.  Barrino got in the lane at will, and Marfo flushed several dump-down passes.  Post-graduate forward Jesse Wims (Watertown, MA) hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 6:24 left in regulation.  Again, Worcester couldn't quite get over the hump, but Barrino tied the game with 10 seconds left on a layup driving right to left.  Commonwealth took the ball down the court and hit a layup with 1 second left to take the lead right back.  A last-second 3-pointer by WA went right, and Commonwealth emerged with a 68-66 victory.

Marfo lead the way for the Hilltoppers with 27 points and 22 rebounds.  Barrino netted 23 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Worcester Academy will travel down to Rhode Island to play in the prestigious National Prep Showcase at Rhode Island College in Providence.  They will play long-standing rival Bridgton Academy at 9:30pm on Friday night, and Bill Crothers Secondary School at 3:00pm on Saturday afternoon.

Summary of February 3 and 4 games

St. Benedict's Prep
The Gray Bees basketball team, ranked 22nd in the nation, raised its record to 22-1 with victories the last two nights against in-state rivals, Lawrenceville and Peddie. Arnaldo Toro (pictured) had two monster games – first adding 21 points and 15 rebounds in an 80-59 victory over Lawrenceville on Wednesday in Dalton Gym. He then contributed 27 points and 8 boards a night later on the road in Hightstown when SBP defeated Peddie, 72-64. David Beatty scored 22 points against Lawrenceville, while James Scott contributed 16 and Bourama Sidibe had 12 points. In the Lawrenceville game, Scott and Beatty again joined Toro in double figures with 20 and 13 points, respectively.

WA Tops Bill Crothers, 62-57

Worcester Academy traveded to Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon to play in the prestigious National Prep School Invitational against Bill Crothers Secondary School from Toronto.  WA lead the entire game and topped Bill Crothers, 62-57.

Post-graduate point guard Nassir Barrino (Newark, NJ) got the scoring started for WA with 3 first-half steals and layups.  A late Bill Crothers push left Worcester with a 4 point lead at the half, 34-30.

The Hilltoppers built a double-digit lead early in the half, but Bill Crothers kept hanging around.  A few big 3-pointers by post-graduate guard and Bryant-bound Tanner Johnson (Lexington, KY) and junior guard Charlie Clay (Southborough, MA) gave WA the lead for good, as they hung on for a 62-57 win.

Johnson hit four 3's for the game, and lead the Hilltoppers in scoring with 18 points.  Senior forward/center Kevin Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ), who is heading to George Washington next year, scored 14 points and grabbed 18 rebounds.  Senior forward James Wells (Waterville, VT) scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, and Clay scored 10 (including three 3-pointers) points.

WA improves to 10-10, and will head on the road for two games next week.  The Hilltoppers will travel to face PA Exeter on Wednesday at 5:00pm, then head to Wilbraham & Monson next Saturday at 4:30pm.  WA will return home to play Hoosac School next Sunday, 2/14, at 1:00pm in a make-up game from earlier in the season.

Marfo's Layup Late Lifts WA Over Exeter

Worcester Academy traveled to Phillips Exeter on Wednesday afternoon and emerged victorious after Kevin Marfo's layup with 0.7 seconds to play put WA ahead, 63-61. WA got off to a slow start, including going through a 5-minute scoreless streak in the middle of the first half. Thankfully, their defense proved tough for Exeter, and they went into the locker room down 31-21 at halftime. Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ), a senior who is committed to play at George Washington next season, scored 6 first-half points, as did senior forward James Wells (Waterville, VT). Worcester clawed their way back in the game in the second half thanks to a small lineup that pressed up on Exeter. Post-grad point guard Nassir Barrino (Newark, NJ), junior forward Caden Dumas (Holden, MA), and junior guard Charlie Clay (Southborough, MA) all contributed steals to the Hilltopper attack. Post-graduate guard Tanner Johnson (Lexington, KY), who is committed to play at Bryant, hit a big 3-pointer to lift WA. But post-grad guard Joshua Abrahams (New York, NY) hit one big 3-pointer and one big mid-range late. The Hilltoppers got the necessary stops late, and Marfo got the ball on the left block with 7 seconds remaining. He spun off the double team and hit a stretched-out layup from the left side with 0.7 seconds left to give WA a 63-61 lead. Exeter's last second 3-pointer fell short, and WA emerged victorious. Marfo lead the way with 26 points (10/12 FG) and 14 rebounds (9 offensive). Wells scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Abrahams, Barrino, and Johnson all scored 7 points apiece. Worcester notches their second straight win and improves to 11-10 on the season. They will head to Wilbraham & Monson on Saturday at 4:30pm, and return home on Sunday at 1:00pm to play Class AA member Hoosac School.

For those in attendance at the St. Joe's game, the lone bright spot was the kid who I assume was Darnell Rogers playing for Falls Church at halftime of the game today.  Wearing #11 for the white team.  That kid was small, but man could he handle the rock. Had to be Darnell, right?

ARNALDO TORO, PF, ST. BENEDICT’S, 2016: It was the best that I had seen Toro play all year long as the 6-foot-8 big man finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds in the win on Saturday evening. He set the tone down low with physical play as he finished off a number of put backs and one or two dribble back downs that led to easy baby hook shots. Throw in the fact that Toro can step out and hit the deep jumper, something that he did on two separate occasions, and the George Washington signee is going to be a solid, four-year guy for Mike Lonergan and his staff in DC. He competes with a solid motor, has fine hands, and is getting much better laterally in defending away from the basket. Add it all up and the St. Benedict’s big man should be a fine asset on either end and a scoring threat on any given night within the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Worcester Academy Defeats Class AA foe Hoosac

Worcester Academy hosted fellow NEPSAC Class AA team Hoosac School on Sunday afternoon.  WA lead wire-to-wire and held on for a 88-74 victory.

Senior big man and George Washington commit Kevin Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ) scored the first two baskets for WA inside, and Bryant-bound post-graduate guard Tanner Johnson (Lexington, KY) hit 5 3-pointers in the first half to lead the Hilltoppers.  Johnson's 15 points lead WA in the first half, while post-graduate point guard Nassir Barrino scored 11 first-half points.  WA lead 38-28 at the half.

After scoring the last 5 WA points of the first half, Barrino went on a personal 8-0 run to start the second half, getting to the basket at will.  A big-time dunk by post-graduate forward Jesse Wims (Watertown, MA), who will play at Redlands University in California next year, plus baskets inside from Marfo paced the Hilltoppers, and they pulled out a key 88-74 win.

Barrino lead WA with 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.  Marfo recorded another double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds.  Johnson scored 17, and Wims chipped in 10 points and 3 steals.

Worcester Academy wins its 4th straight contest to improve to 13-10, including a 9-6 NEPSAC Class AA mark.

WA Over Tabor On The Road

Worcester Academy drove down to Marion, MA, to take on Tabor Academy on Wednesday afternoon.  WA emerged with a road win, beating Tabor 63-50.

WA extended their lead in the first half, but wasn't able to completely pull away from Tabor.  Post-graduate guard Tanner Johnson (Lexington, KY) hit 3 3-pointers and lead WA in first-half scoring with 13 points.  Post-graduate guard Nassir Barrino (Newark, NJ) had 8 points at halftime, and WA took a 33-26 lead into the locker room.

Tabor came out hot, and it was a tight game until late.  Big baskets inside by senior big man Kevin Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ), plus key 3-pointers by Johnson and junior guard Charlie Clay (Southborough, MA) gave WA the lead for good.  The Hilltopper defense tightened up, only allowing 1 point over the last 6 minutes of the game.  The 15-1 run was the difference in the game.

Johnson, who is committed to Bryant, and Marfo, who is committed to George Washington, lead WA in scoring with 16 points each.  Marfo also had 11 rebounds, recording his 6th consecutive double-double.  Barrino chipped in 15 points on 7/11 FG shooting.  Post-graduate forward Jesse Wims (Watertown, MA) added 6 points.  Clay and junior forward Caden Dumas (Holden, MA) lead WA with 4 assists each.

Worcester wins their 5th straight game.  They will be home for three straight contests, beginning on Friday with a NEPSAC Class AA matchup against Bradford Christian Academy.  That game will tip at 5:30pm.  The Hilltoppers return to Rowe Court on Saturday for a 3:00pm tilt with Kimball Union Academy.

Beatty finished with 19 points, while Toro led the team with 24 and Scott added 16. Bourama Sidibe and Damon Wall rounded out the five players in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Gray Bees will try for its second straight state championship on Saturday back at Dalton Gym. Game time is 4 p.m.

Long Suffering Fan2/19/2016 8:42:02 AM

And still nothing on Darnell.  Am I the only one worried here?

Thomas2/19/2016 9:14:28 AM

If Darnell is unable to attend GW next season, it frees up a scholarship for ML and the staff to add another player. With all the de-commits, transfers and unsigned HS seniors that will be available after the season, having an available scholarship ready to give out at a moment's notice is great. GW doesn't necessarily need to depend on a player(s) transferring to free up a scholarship. Also GW incoming class without Darnell is still a very good class, so they won't be desperate to fill in the last scholarship like they were in 2013.

Long Suffering Fan2/19/2016 10:44:10 AM

Agreed, Thomas. but Darnell is a very special recruit, both in terms of is his potential and his pedigree.   On one hand, there has been nothing to specifically indicate that he will not be at GW next season.  On the other hand, it is worrisome that we can't find anything on him for the 2015-2016 season...not a box score, not an article, nothing to indicate an injury.   For somone with my negative attitude, I can only assume the worst.

GW20172/19/2016 10:53:51 AM

I'm with you here LSF. For a fairly talked about prospect due to how special he is, no news on him at all is very bizarre. I now wonder if I'd rather have Darnell just have a quiet senior year for some reason and then show up to GW, or Darnell not be able to play for GW next year and the scholarship be freed up for a potential transfer.

As for hypothetically filling up that extra scholarship, I agree with Thomas that the incoming class is pretty good regardless, and they don't have to rush to fill up a scholarship, so hopefully they'd take their time to find a really solid player

2016 FHSAA Boys Class 4A Basketball Championship-Bolles gets to state class 4Afinals behind 31 points from Collin Smith

On Senior Night, Worcester Academy hosted rival Cushing Academy in a key NEPSAC Class AA clash on Wednesday afternoon.  An exciting game ended with WA dropping this one, 79-69 in overtime.

Worcester got off to a 15-7 lead on Cushing thanks to two big buckets from senior big man Kevin Marfo (Bergenfield, NJ) and a floater from post-graduate Tanner Johnson (Lexington, KY), along with a corner 3-pointer from junior forward Caden Dumas (Holden, MA).  The first half was a defensive battle, and, thanks to a buzzer-beating 30-footer, Cushing took a 36-32 lead into the half.

WA chipped away early with baskets from Marfo, who is committed to play at George Washington, and post-graduate guard Joshua Abrahams (New York, NY).  A late Charlie Clay (Southborough, MA) 3-pointer put WA up 4, but Cushing came back with a big 3-pointer and a layup to tie the game. WA's last second floater fell short, and the two rivals headed to overtime, where Cushing took an early lead and hung on to the end for a 79-69 win.

Johnson, who is committed to Bryant, lead the Hilltoppers in scoring with 21 points.  Marfo had 17 points and a career-high 23 rebounds.

Some tidbits from BM's link:

- Smith is now being called 6'10"

- according to the Jacksonville paper, Smith outplayed Kevin Knox (#6 recruit in the nation, starter for USA basketball junior team, had offers from Duke, UNC, Kansas, and basically every other school)

- Smith had 31 points in the big win.

-Bolles hasn't made it this far in the playoffs in a couple of decades

MD-DC2/25/2016 9:22:30 AM

BM (or other recruit-savvy posters),

What's up with the "NR" on the ESPN ratings on Smith? I know we've seen it in the past where they're an international student or whatever, but has he simply just not been evaluated because, for lack of better term, he doesn't "rate it"? Very curious because he seems to be progressing well and could be an impact player.

herve2/25/2016 9:28:34 AM

My bet is he was an under-the-radar recruit who committed early to a "mid-major" and thus never warranted the always-objective eye of the recruiting services. If he had signed with say, "Wake Forest", then he'd be a 3.5 star player over night.

BM2/25/2016 9:31:29 AM

Looks like our froncourt is going to dominate the A-10 for many years to come.

MD-DC2/25/2016 9:42:56 AM

Thanks, Herve. I figured as much. I'm excited to see the big men get here next year, but not excited to watch our seniors leave us.

BM2/25/2016 9:44:11 AM

Smith has exactly zero articles written about him on Rivals, ESPN or Scout and is actually missing from the Scout database.  I think Rivals very recently gave him three stars.

Mike K2/25/2016 2:57:32 PM

Herve hit the nail on the head .  Above is the most recent rating.

It took a long time to recognize and/or note his talent and ability.

Bigfan2/25/2016 3:14:21 PM

Several of these guys, if not all, seem to be real contributors and that plugs a big hole that we have now and will in the future.

Though it was nail-biting, ML really landed some nice bigs from all appearances. Smith particularly was under the radar. Wondered about him about high-level competition and apparently we now have the answer.

Also these guys will learn a lot from senior Tyler, who is a blue collar-type player with an outside shot a big time basketball pedigree.

 Great job, ML.

Colonial'132/25/2016 3:33:03 PM

Is it wrong to think that with the additions of Marfo, Toro, and Smith that we will not be seeing much of Cimino or Goss next year? I definitely don't know a whole lot about these new guys, but on the surface it seems like they are a whole lot more explosive and can make an impact right away.

Bigfan2/26/2016 5:21:36 PM

All of our recruits are doing real well, except for Darnell and not worried about Darnell's basketball ability, which is both proven and genetic.

Have no idea why he and his family thought it was a good idea to change schools, but basketball should be a secondary consideration. May be wrong, but pretty sure Darnell is a player, no matter what he does in high school.

Rather he just work on academics. Kid speaks either Italian or French, so he is certainly capable of doing it. Hopefully, needs to buckle down, like any other high school senior in America.

That's really good news. Sometimes it is clear when a recruit isn't performing in high school, or against really weak competition there are probles.

Also, as much as I bust Bo's chops about some other issues, have to say Bo made a valuable, reassuring post on Darnell. So, credit Bo Knows for this news.

And Poog, of course, who knows a lot, graciously stepped in as well. That's a real help because people seemed to be wondering about Darnell.

Anyone who saw Shawnta, even if he and his son are believed to be not totally comparable, has to be excited at the prospect of seeing Darnell in a GW uniform.

I didn't see this mentioned previously and thought it was interesting. It's about a month old.  It was nice to read the word "depth" associated with GW. I found it while looking for ANY current information regarding Darnell Rogers, which is proving difficult to do.

2cents3/1/2016 4:32:30 PM

Here's the GW summary, but others of note are VCU, UMass, Witchita and Gonzaga

10. George Washington

247 Class Ranking: 63

George Washington is building momentum in the Atlantic 10, and hopes its 2016 class will keep the program’s momentum going in the right direction.

The Colonials class doesn’t have any name in particular that catch your attention, but it does have depth — it features four players (Kevin Marfo, Jair Bolden, Darnell Rogers and Arnaldo Toro) who are rated as 3-star prospects.

Even with four 3-star commitments, the Colonials still have only the third-highest rated class in the A-10, which is a testament to how strong the conference is. Even so, George Washington fans should feel good about their class.

Noting that St Ben's (Toro) will play in the St James invitational in Hagerstown, MD and the National HS Invitational.  St James (featuring the Golden brothers) just won the MAC tournament with wins over Maret (Garza) and Sidwell.  All the games of the NHSI will be broadcast on ESPN and the finals will be at MSG.

Adam Mitola is also playing in a state tournament, but I can't find a bracket.

Is Adam M a GW walkon?

BM3/2/2016 2:15:57 PM

Looks like he needs some personal time with Coach Johnson to trim off the baby fat.

Yes, Adam Mitola is a "preferred walk on" at GW next season.

Bigfan3/3/2016 3:01:36 AM

Looks just like his brother, with darker hair.

Nice 3 point shot.

Welcome Adam!

Long Suffering Fan3/3/2016 6:23:18 AM

OK...I'll bite.   What is meant by a "preferred" walk on?   Sounds like a non-scholarship player who may get to see the court?

Poog3/3/2016 7:55:54 AM

Not subject to a cattle call walk-on tryout but given an assured opportunity to come out for the team to try to make it. Spot on roster not guaranteed but subject to coach's discretion and availability of roster space and need.

BM3/3/2016 3:48:00 PM

Marfo 17 & 10 in season finale.

Toro 16 & 12 on senior day.

Mitola 13 & 10 in first round of playoffs

Throw in Smith's +10 reb/game average and rebounding shouldn't be a problem next season.

Jair Bolden 5:1 Assist to Turnover Ratio.  Really impressive at any level.

GWAlum20013/3/2016 4:34:13 PM

ML has said it numerous times, he recruits walk-ons and has since he got here.  I don't believe he holds public try outs.

Hugh3/3/2016 4:51:01 PM

Pretty sure it means he's been guaranteed a spot on the team, he just doesn't have a scholly.

BM3/9/2016 8:30:36 AM

Adam Mitola 10 & 5 in state final to lose to Roselle Catholic.

RKelley3/9/2016 11:46:21 PM

The fact that we made 48% of our 2's this year, while taking few three's is a bad sign. Defenses crowded the paint, and it made it hard to finish.

No matter who the recruits are, I hope the practice minutes are spent passing, moving the ball and practing plays to beat zone defenses next year. I hope the offensive tempo is much faster next year, and the team has the shooters to attack from the perimeter (not just take the open shot). Good perimeter shooters scare the shit out of defenses. When defenses are scared and tired, they give up opportunities. Allowing your opponent to sit in a conservative zone for half the game, while you take 19 seconds to take a shot every possession, lets them conserve way too much energy.

They need to raise their eFG and they need to push the ball again. Hopefully Sina will be a saavy and aggressive point guard. I'm worried he's conservative and lacks footspeed. One thing this team needs more of is speed at guard.

The amount of man defense the team played this year, while playing so many players 30+ minutes was too much. The 1-3-1 doesn't save energy. And no-fouls defense doesn't create enough turnovers.

RKelley3/9/2016 11:48:12 PM

The core four were all sub 3-star recruits. Marfo, Toro, Sina, Cavanaugh are the most purely talented players this team has seen in a long time. Smith and Bolden have some tools, and Yuta, Hart and PJ do as well. Should be a good team next year, but they need to play looser, and more aggressively/nastier.

BM3/11/2016 8:32:00 PM

If you want to see a winner, Toro's St Ben's vs Riverdale live here.  He's #12 in white.

BM3/13/2016 10:31:15 AM

St Ben's won the St James Invitational last night (ML was there) and stands at 35-1 going into the first round game of the National HS Championship against La Lumiere (which they already beat earlier this year).

RKelley3/13/2016 11:03:54 AM

i think Toro will be a Peyton Aldridge-type player with size, a shot and rebounding skills. I'm excited to see what we get out Smith and Bolden. Bolden looks a little slower but I like his jump shot and the numbers indicate the good things--as @FreeQuebec mentioned his ast/to ratio looks quality for a guy that's build like a forward.

Smith, who got like no scouting points from a lot of media outlets looks like a really nice pickup to me. He's huge and athletic and moves really smoothly for his size--not like the big dopey center types that stumble over themselves as they jog at 2mph around the floor missing every rebound possible.

I think Toro could be like Alldridge, Bolden like a better version of Mikic. I hope some of these kids bring the attitude factor that and energy that this team needs.

notta hater3/13/2016 11:18:27 AM

are any of our recruits from public schools?

Free Quebec 3/13/2016 11:31:06 AM

I was thinking Isaiah Miles as the comp for Toro because of how (I hope) he moves and the fact that he seems to be a jump shot / rebound guy at the same size.  Obviously Miles this year was phenomenal so long way to go for him to be like that, but that style of player and potential is what I'm hoping for Toro.

Florida Colonial3/13/2016 8:21:23 PM

BM, Mitola did even better against RC the first game he played against My school; Over 20. However, RC played terrible against St. Anthony's the next game. Well, at least 3 out of 4 against Hurley in Championship games isn't bad.  Wish we could get some of school's players to GW. Briscoe went to KY this year.

Details of Dick's HS National Championships.  Games are on various TV channels starting today at noon and the final will be at MSG.

GW Bar Owner3/31/2016 10:07:05 AM

GW212 mentioned in one the blog posts a bar near MSG owned by a GW alumnus.  That's me. The bar is called Dewey's Pub and it is at 135 West 30th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues).  If there's some interest we can do some kind of special for GW fans pre-game or post-game tonight.  In any event, it's good food and 25 beers on tap.
